DAY 1 - EXPERIENCE
Section outline
-
Let’s begin this journey by putting on a learner hat and participating in asynchronous online discussions (AOD) that have been set up on different platforms, using different modalities (e.g., videos, pictures, sound, text), and that achieve different goals.
Think of what follows as a fair that lets you explore different platforms for hosting an AOD that you may or may not have used before. Feel free to explore as many, or as few, as you want. This is meant to be a fun exploration.
Instructions for participating in each AOD are provided by clicking on each item below. As you respond and post on each of the AOD, consider:
- What works? (What engages you as someone who is posting an original post and how motivated are you to explore the posts of your colleagues?)
- What does not work? (Does the medium enhance or deter you from deep thinking? What are the hurdles to making a post? Are there barriers to exploring what others have posted?)
- When would such a medium or platform be suitable in a curriculum, and when it might not be? In other words, in which context or for which educational goal might you want to use this platform or AOD format?
-
Let's get to know each other by sharing one thing that makes us special, using the platform Padlet and generative AI.
-
Let's use Flip (formerly Flipgrid) to introduce ourselves in a video to the group.
-
There are many whiteboard tools that allow students to add sticky notes to a canvas. Today we will use Canva to reflect using the KWL framework.
-
Here we will use a Google Doc to generate a repository of this group's best experience with AODs and to think of how some of these examples could work in your context.
-
Add a post to a SPLOT (a course blog) that shares your favourite resource for designing of facilitating an online discussion.
