Today we continue our investigation of our syllabi, specifically looking for opportunities to connect with learners and injecting compassion into our syllabi. Start by reviewing the example of a TI syllabus from the University of Edinboro. Also consider what you identified in yesterday’s interrogation of your syllabus for cruelty.

Continue to work on your syllabus by composing new content that provides an opportunity for connection, additional information and explanation on policy, personal information like pronouns etc. I suggest continuing to use track changes and keeping the original ‘cruel’ content in the document for reference.

A reminder of some of the areas that could be added or amended to create an opportunity for connection:

·       Contact / Office hours as well as an explanation of what these times can be used for.

·       Best contact methods and response time.

Course guidelines for behavior and language.

·       Content warnings related to any learning materials or topics that may be triggering for students.

·       Self-care suggestions and links to campus and community support services.

·       Your personal philosophy of supportive and student centred teaching.

·       Your pronouns

·       Options for diverse ways of showing knowledge (i.e., choice in assessments).

Your forum post assignment for today is to upload your edited syllabus (with track changes) to the forum. You can add the document as an attachment to your post.

Please upload by the end of today or tomorrow morning so your co-learners have time to read and provide feedback.

Good work so far everyone,

Matty
