Assumptions that ground my TI pedagogy
Completion requirements
These are some of the assumptions I try to hold when I think about being as flexible, compassionate and student-centred as possible in my teaching. I offer them to you as an invitation for consideration. I feel that every pedagogy is unique - it's a living and developing concept that takes shape in a specific time and place within the relational space of at least two people. Therefore, each educator's approach to teaching is bound to be different. Perhaps not all of these ideas resonate with you, but I'm willing to bet some of them do. You're welcome to take what works for you and leave what doesn't.
- Trust your learners.
- They are central to your classroom, not you.
- You are there to support them to succeed.
- Success may look different for each learner.
- Learners are doing the best with what they have.
- Learners are holistic persons, so treat them as such.
- TI teaching is a lot about perspective shift. But, there are also practical things we can do (assessment, language choice etc.).
- TI principles will help everyone in the classroom, not just those with trauma.
- If the whole institution is grounded in TI principles, the better and more consistent experience the student will have.
