Welcome to Online Conferences: Professional Development for a Networked Era!

About this seminar
This 2-week seminar discussion is part of the professional reading series, and is based on the book Online Conferences: Professional Development for a Networked Era, by Lynn Anderson and Terry Anderson. We will share experiences and advice on how to plan or participate effectively in an online professional development conference. Lynn and Terry have provided other background reading as well, so even if you haven't had a chance to read the book you should still participate!

We will kick off the discussion with a 60-minute web conference in Elluminate on April 11, 2011 at 10:00 PDT, 17:00 GMT.

About our facilitators
Lynn Anderson is an eLearning Consultant and Online Professional Development Event Coordinator. Many of you will be familiar with Lynn's involvement with the Canadian Institute of Distance Education Research at Athabasca University as the CIDER Sessions Coordinator.

Hello Online Community Enthusiasts!

I'd like to draw your attention to several events, all related to the theme of this year's Gathering of Online Community Enthusiasts: planning excellent community events.

1. SCoPE seminar (online): Online Conferences: Professional Development for a Networked Era, April 11-22, 2011
During this event we will share experiences and advice on how to plan or participate effectively in an online professional development conference. Our facilitators, Lynn Anderson and Terry Anderson, have written a book based on their research and experiences. It will be of interest to anyone who has participated in an online conference of any kind, which is just about everybody! As with all SCoPE activities, you are welcome to participate according to your own time and interests, and there is no registration required. Just show up!

We will kick off the seminar with a Web Conference in Elluminate – Monday, April 11, 10:00 PDT, 17:00 GMT

2. The 3rd annual Gathering of Online Community Enthusiasts , (OCE2011) is May 12, 2011 in Vancouver. The theme this year is planning excellent community events and will be a full day of talking about and experiencing various event formats, strategies, and technologies. There will be an opportunity to participate from a distance as well, so watch this OCE2011 space in SCoPE. If you plan to attend, RSVP here.

3. Michelle Laurie is organizing a Graphic Facilitation Workshop July 13-15, 2011 in Rossland, B.C. Nancy White, workshop facilitator, outlines the event here. I highly recommend this experience, even (especially) if you think you can't draw.
Things are coming together nicely for the 3rd annual gathering of online community enthusiasts! We have a venue and the planning is underway.

If you think you'll be joining us RSVP here.

To stay in the loop you should subscribe to the OCE2011 Gathering: Before and After forum, by email or RSS.

Do you have any questions?
Hello all LAK11 participants.

The researchers involved in this project are approaching a deadline for a paper which includes a case study on the use of the Student Activity Meter in this course. Your participation is much appreciated!
Sylvia

Dear LAK course participant,

You might have found and used the Student Activity Meter (SAM) that was posted in the LAK forum (http://scope.bccampus.ca/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=16525). The tool visualizes the time spent and resource use of all LAK course participants (including your data!). It is available here: http://ariadne.cs.kuleuven.be/monitorwidget-lak11 - enter your first and last name to view your time and resource use.

We would love to get some feedback from you that will help us to improve our work.

You can fill out the evaluation form: http://bit.ly/surv-lak

If possible, please fill out the survey by the end of the week. Your feedback would be much appreciated!

Thank you very much,
Sten Govaerts, Katrien Verbert & Erik Duval
Welcome to Engaging Students in Inquiry Learning!

About this seminar
The focus of this Art of Teaching seminar will be Engaging Students in Inquiry Learning. Each week of this 3-week seminar will be launched with a selection and discussion from the Art of Teaching: Engaging Students in Inquiry Learning videos.

The first web conference will open with the question – what is inquiry learning and what are its various forms in our post-secondary programs? From this foundational question, we will analyze our first video vignette with the goal of identifying elements that might be adaptable to different contexts. The second and third web conferences will focus on a diversity of models and interpretations of inquiry learning using selected examples from the online videos.

All videos are available online for you to view at any time, and are accompanied by chapter summaries in PDF format.

About our facilitator
Neil Smith claims to be retired from Vancouver Island University but from what I have witnessed he is busier than ever! Neil was a Teaching Scholar with the university's Innovation and Excellence in Learning Centre and a member of the Faculty of Education. Neil's current teaching is in M.Ed. Leadership studies.
