1. Two Apologies

I need to start off the MicroSCoPE newsletter with two big apologies, both related to some settings that were inadvertently changed on the SCoPE main page. The first apology is for the spam message you may have received in September advertising a certain brand of boots. The second apology is *in advance* -- you may be unwillingly receiving this newsletter because we lost our information about members who had unsubscribed. Here are some steps to change your settings if you prefer not to receive this newsletter by email:

2. SCoPE Seminar: The Art of Teaching

October 19 - November 6, 2009

This seminar begins tomorrow! It is organized around Vancouver Island University's Art of Teaching video series. Each of the 3 weeks will be launched with a video and discussion in Elluminate, Mondays at 10:00 PDT (17:00 GMT).

3. Professional Learning Series

BCcampus, eCampus Alberta, and Alberta-North are teaming together to organize a new series of professional learning opportunities. These online events focus on emerging topics in elearning, and are free and open to the public.
4. Mark Your Calendars

* Re-Thinking E-Learning Research, facilitated by Norm Friesen, Canada Research Chair in E-Learning Practices, November 9 - 27, 2009. This is the next book in our Professional Reading Group Series. Start reading! Purchase the book or download selected chapters from this Wiki.
* Digital Identity, facilitated by Trish Rosseel and Cindy Underhill, December 1 - 18, 2009. During this discussion we will address important questions of concern to both educators and learners.
* The World is Open: How Web Technology is Revolutionizing Education, facilitated by Curtis Bonk. This is a live session and 3-day Q&A with the author. Information about the book can be found on The World is Open blog, including a link to an upcoming free "book extension".
* Guiding the E-Researcher, facilitated by Janet Salmons, January 18 - 29, 2010. This seminar will explore ways that educators can guide learners through a few key e-research steps needed to use synchronous tools for scholarly interviews. The seminar is part of our Professional Reading Group Series, and will draw on Janet's new book: Online Interviews in Real Time.
* Culturally Diverse Learners: February 1-19, 2010

During this seminar we took some time to reflect on the past and plan for the future by addressing these core questions: What have you liked about SCoPE? What would you change? What are your ideas for future activities? This wiki is a summary of the contributions.
* Aftermath of the Canadian Copyright Consultation
October 6, 2009
Maureen Baron, President of the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education facilitated a lively and interactive discussion, and generally raised awareness about copyright issues in Canada. Access the Elluminate recording and drop in the forum to post questions or comments.
* SCoPE Seminar: Collaborative Projects on WikiEducator
August 10 - 28, 2009
Facilitators: Nellie Deutsch and Gladys Gahona
In this seminar we were introduced to the many opportunities available to educators to learn from others, to collaborate on curriculum projects, and to explore new technologies that will improve educational access and quality.There were several scheduled events and peripheral activities during these three weeks.

6. PeriSCoPE

* October 19 - 23, 2009 is Open Access Week and there are opportunities to participate in events all over the world. Athabasca University is hosting a series of five online webcasts exploring major issues and opportunities presented by open access.
* Social Media: Trends and Implications for Learning This is a free monthly discussion, hosted by AACE and facilitated by George Siemens and David Cormier. The next session is October 30, 2009.
* The next Learning4Content online workshop is October 26, to November 6, 2009
* The next CIDER Session is Social Networking with Web 2.0: A Comparative Study of On-Campus and On-line Students, November 4, 2009. CIDER sessions are targeted at distance education researchers, graduate students, and practitioners. Each session features an active researcher talking about their project, methodologies used, and their results. If you are interested in presenting your research in a future CIDER session, contact Lynn Anderson: lynnlo@cogeco.ca.
