1. SCoPE seminar: Managing Multimembership in Social Networks

How do you track and keep up with blog conversations? How do you manage your time as you engage in social networks? What are our limits as we integrate social learning into our work environments? When you do find yourself becoming disconnected from your networks and organized activities, how do you return to the fray? As facilitators how do you manage multimembership for your participants? Many of us confess to fumbling along and we engage in multiple networks. Yet many networks are essential for the projects, sectors, and people that we work with, and for staying abreast of hot issues. Multi-membership and multi-platform overload is becoming a BIG challenge!
This seminar is organized as part of the Facilitating Online Communities course mini-conference. So far we have been collecting stories, questions, tools, strategies, and interesting data through a survey, Voice Thread, and the seminar forum. During week 2 the discussions will be heating up with summaries posted to a wiki. Unsure how to jump in? Feel free to begin a new discussion thread.

What do we mean by "boundaries"? and is that different that what we mean by "barriers"? How can we move beyond boundaries or barriers? Why would we want to? Join us for this 3-week seminar to explore how we're learning on the edge. This seminar is organized in collaboration with the British Columbia Educational Technology Users Group.

* SCoPE Seminar: Building a Virtual Museum of the History of Educational Technology
October 1-21, 2008
Facilitator: Richard Schwier
This seminar launched the design phase of a freely accessible and collaborative museum of educational technology. During our 3 weeks we began a conversation about our history and discussed how we will shape this living and growing resource together. This "so long, and thanks for the fish" post by Richard provides a nice summary, points to outcome resources, and outlines the next steps. The "Virtual Museum" project is just beginning and there are many ways to get involved! Cindy Seibel, a technology director in a K-12 school district in Alberta is taking Virtual Museum project to the Alberta Technology Leaders in Education: Synergy 2008 conference next week. Check out Cindy's workshop description and presentation slides. We all have stories to tell or artefacts to share. How will you contribute to the museum?

The focus of this year's Next Steps discussion was the format of SCoPE seminars and the process for proposing discussion topics of interest to the community. Several topics were recommended and gathered into a Seminar Topics and Roles wiki. It was also suggested we consider various roles to distribute the workload.

* Congratulations to Geoffrey Glass, Cindy Xin, and Andrew Feenburg from Simon Fraser University, recipients of the 2008 BC Innovation Award for their Marginalia project.
* Janet Salmons and Lynn Wilson have edited a new book just released by IGI Global: Handbook of Research on Electronic Collaboration and Organizational Synergy. Join Janet, Lynn and authors across the globe for a webinar series sponsored by Elluminate.
* The Second International m-libraries Conference will be hosted by the University of British Columbia in collaboration with Athabasca University, the Open University (UK) and Thompson Rivers University. The aim of the conference is to explore and share work carried out in libraries around the world to deliver services and resources to users ‘on the move’ via mobile or handheld devices. Submit your abstracts by December 15, 2008.
* Curt Bonk, co-chair of the program committee, reminds us that it's not too late to register for E-LEARN 2008 November 17-21, 2008. You'll recognize several SCoPE members on the program.
* Paul Stacey is attending the WCET conference on behalf of BCcampus this week to accept the WOW award for the Dare2BDigital project.
* The Active Learning Carnival is celebrating its first birthday and 3,707 readers.
* Join the SCoPE group at Linkedin to connect with others who are interested in employment in education or in connecting professionally on projects, follow SCoPE on Twitter and check out the SCoPE Facebook group and member networking as a way to keep in the loop.
