I have been teaching at the post-secondary level since 1991. I am now at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, British Columbia and teach in the Department of Natural Resource Sciences. My academic training is primarily in botany and mycology and I hold a PhD degree in botany from Oregon State University.

Over the last five years, I have turned my attention in scholarly endeavors to activities related to improving teaching and learning in post-secondary education. I am involved in initiatives at TRU dealing with scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning, student ratings of instruction, and promotion and tenure for teaching faculty. TRU is an affiliate member of the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL program).

I am actively involved in the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE). Over the last four years, my colleagues, Alan Wright and George Gordon, and I have presented workshops on our ideas for professionalizing post-secondary education through a national plan that would provide for national accreditation of teacher training programmes and certification of teachers.
