FLO MicroCourse: Embracing Emotional Intelligence and AI for Inclusive Education

Course Overview:
This seven-day course is designed to integrate Emotional Intelligence (EI) with Generative AI (GenAI) in higher education, focusing on developing self-awareness, empathy, conflict resolution, ethical leadership, well-being, community building, and goal-setting.


Course Outline:

Day 1: Emotional Intelligence in Higher Education
Overview of EI’s role in education, with a focus on self-awareness and emotional regulation. Activities include journaling with ChatGPT and sharing reflections with peers.
Learning Outcomes: Recognize EI’s importance in personal and academic success, use GenAI for emotional insights, and reflect on emotional growth.

Day 2: Cultivating Empathy
Explore empathy’s role in communication and conflict resolution through Brené Brown’s video on empathy. Reflect on personal experiences and practice empathetic communication.
Learning Outcomes: Identify empathy’s key components, differentiate empathy from sympathy, and apply empathy in personal and professional interactions.

Day 3: Conflict Resolution and Mediation
Learn foundational skills for managing conflicts constructively, using AI tools as supportive resources. Discuss the balance between AI and human empathy in resolving disputes.
Learning Outcomes: Define conflict resolution concepts, explore AI’s role in mediation, and apply techniques for collaborative conflict resolution.

Day 4: Ethical Decision-Making and Responsible Leadership
Analyze ethical leadership in the context of GenAI in education, with role-play scenarios on leading responsibly.
Learning Outcomes: Evaluate ethical principles in leadership, apply decision-making frameworks, and assess ethical challenges posed by GenAI.

Day 5: GenAI and Well-being
Examine the effects of AI on well-being and mental health, creating a personalized well-being plan using GenAI tools.
Learning Outcomes: Assess GenAI’s impact on well-being, design personalized well-being strategies, and reflect on ethical considerations in AI’s role in mental health.

Day 6: Building Community in Education
Study the importance of community and peer support in student well-being, with a TED Talk and activity on creating a virtual campaign for mental health.
Learning Outcomes: Recognize the role of community in well-being, use GenAI to foster trust and connections, and reflect on community’s mental health impact.

Day 7: Reflection, Integration, and Action Planning
Develop strategies for personal and academic growth through reflection and goal-setting, with support from GenAI.
Learning Outcomes: Understand reflection’s role in learning, set achievable goals, and explore GenAI’s support for reflective practices.
