Ethical Framework Examples from Instructors
Completion requirements
NOTE: Developing an ethical framework for AI image generation is a personal endeavour. Some may prefer a series of questions to ask themselves before or during the process, while others may opt for a single statement, a checklist, or even an acronym. The key is to create a framework that aligns with your individual approach.
Brent's Ethical Framework for using AI image generation:
Here is an example of my framework, which I consider a tool – a
guideline or living document that I can modify as needed. As conditions
change or my workflow evolves, I can update my framework to reflect
those new factors.
- Purpose: Why am I using AI instead of other tools?
- Originality: Am I using the style and technique of a living artist?
- Impact: Could this tool lead to more stereotypical or colonial images that might harm others?
- Message: What do I aim to communicate?
- Stakes: What are the consequences of this project?
- Audience: Who will view this image?
Here is what I am thinking about with each question:
- Purpose: Why am I using AI instead of other tools?
- Is speed a critical factor?
- Am I trying to create a technique I don't possess?
- Could I use a licensed image, take a photo with my phone, or do I lack a clear understanding of the subject?
- Originality: Am I using the style and technique of a living artist?
- I don't want to rely on someone else's creation to lend credibility to my work.
- I believe artists should have control over how their art is used.
- Impact: Could this tool lead to more stereotypical or colonial images that might harm others?
- Am I creating content that appropriates icons and images from another group?
- Am I reinforcing colonial ideas and stereotypes?
- Message: What do I aim to communicate?
- Why am I creating this image?
- What is the intended message behind it?
- Stakes: What are the consequences of this project?
- Is this image for a one-time use, like a PowerPoint presentation for a small meeting?
- Is this image a permanent representation of my business, like a logo?
- Is this image something I want to include in a published book?
- Audience: Who will view this image?
- What does my audience expect?
- What will resonate best with them?
