Overview

In this course, you'll discover the relationships among design thinking, empathy, and problem reframing and apply your insights to solving an interpersonal challenge of your choosing.

This Facilitating Learning Online (FLO) MicroCourse takes place over 5 days with the goal of providing you with a supportive environment to ask questions, take risks, offer advice, and enjoy exploring the course concepts. It is designed to be short, single-topic, hands-on, and free. In one week you will dip into the FLO experience, and leave with something practical and useful for your own practice.

In this FLO MicroCourse you will:

  • Describe Hybrid and/or HyFlex learning
  • Discuss how Hybrid and/or Hyflex approaches can be applied in your specific setting and/or context
  • Create a resource or instructional plan for Hybrid and/or HyFlex learning approaches appropriate to your setting or context

You are cordially invited to join us for our first optional synchronous session on [INSERT DATE]. This will be an opportunity to acknowledge your land and territory, meet the facilitators and your co-learners, ask any questions regarding expectations, and generally socialize. We look forward to meeting you in BigBlueButton.

For each of the steps below, there is an associated topic in Moodle with a short video, along with suggested readings, and discussion forums. We hope you will take the opportunity to use all of these resources to complete each of the steps below and contribute to our community's practice and knowledge.

Step 1 - Terms and Definitions

Suggested deadline: Tuesday morning

What is meant by the terms "Hybrid" and "HyFlex"? How are these similar? How are they different? How are they distinguished from "blended" learning, or "flipped"?

Post your preferred definition for one of these terms, and link to a resource in the Terms and Definitions discussion forum, and respond to at least one colleague's post.

Step 2 - Contexts and Settings

Suggested deadline: Tuesday evening

Context is everything! As we prepare for the fall semester, we will all have different hopes and expectations for how learning technologies will be used on our campuses. Using the Hybrid/Hyflex template or another tool of your choosing to provide an overview of your expected institutional context or setting. This should be no more than a single page if textual, or a maximum of 5 minutes if in video, audio, or media form.

You should be looking to answer the "5 W's and 1 H" for your expected context or setting:

Who- For example: the number of students in your institution or program; the kinds of students; the teaching or instructional compliment.

What- For example: the kinds of programs--- academic or otherwise--- will be offered in the fall?

When- For example: what timeframe do you have to implement Hybrid and/or HyFlex? Is there a specific deadline?

Where- For example: the location of your campus; buildings and/or classrooms for implementing Hybrid and/or HyFlex?

Why- For example: a rationale for using Hybrid and/or HyFlex. If neither is being looked at or planned for, what is being planned?

How- For example: a series of steps envisioned to make Hybrid and/or HyFlex a reality within your program or institution.

Post your document or artifact in the Contexts and Settings discussion forum, and post at least one substantive reply to a colleague's posting offering constructive feedback, questions, and/or additional resources.

Step 3 - Exploring Hybrid

Recommended deadline: Wednesday night

For those choosing to pursue the Hybrid path through this course, visit the Hybrid Resources for Review page and in the Hybrid Resource Review forum write a brief summary and assessment of the resource. Do you see this as helpful in your intended context or setting? Why or why not?

You are also cordially invited to join us for our second optional synchronous session on [INSERT DATE].

Step 4 - Exploring HyFlex

Recommended deadline: Wednesday night

For those choosing to pursue the HyFlex path through this course, visit the HyFlex Resources for Review page and in the HyFlex Resource Review forum write a brief summary and assessment of the resource. Do you see this as helpful in your intended context or setting? Why or why not?

You are cordially invited to join us for our second optional synchronous session on [INSERT DATE].

Step 5 - Bringing it All Together

Recommended deadline: Monday morning

This is where you you take what you've explored and considered throughout the course and share your Hybrid or HyFlex plan or resource.

If textual, this should be no more than 2 pages long. Other formats--- graphic or media, audio, or video--- should be no longer than 10 minutes long.

Post your resource in the discussion thread, and comment on at least one colleague's resource or plan.

You are cordially invited to join us for our third optional synchronous session on [INSERT DATE].

Congratulations! You've completed the course and earned your badge!
