Note: Apologies for the funky table formatting! Working on it!

Activity: Facilitating the FLO - Pre-course (checklist)

(Hint - do this work in the FLO Sandbox!)

_       Please review the FLO Facilitator Checklist for "Pre-course" items below.

_       Bold indicates items you're already doing in another activity in FDO (e.g. you have been asked to "do a once over" of the FLO and create an introductory post)

_       Choose at least one other item (besides the bold ones) from the checklist and do them. There are tips for how to proceed in the right column, with resources to help. Don't worry about making a mess, that's what the Sandbox site is for.

_       Let us know how it went! Post your results to the forum.

Task

How you could try this in FDO
Note: There is an FLO Sandbox site for you to play in

Do a once over on the course to see what’s old - update facilitator names etc. / Remove any customization from last time around (especially things added to support a specific mini-session). Test/update links.

This is part of the "Getting Started" activities in Week 1 - you're already on your way to completing this one - check!

Decide how much detail you want to display up front, in particular on the HUB landing page.

There are many options for organizing and displaying instructions, and easy access to useful tools and course information. Try adding "blocks", or editing activities or resources so that the description displays on the page where they are located.

Update course schedule (page or calendar)

Go to the FLO Sandbox and add an entry or two to the schedule. You may wish to try out the calendar tool as an option for publishing a schedule. If you try subscribing to the calendar, you'll be ready to explain how to your FLO participants.

Is the Blackboard Collaborate room link up to date?

n/a

Check the navigation information in the FLO Handbook, and see what you would add or create to improve it.

Try making a short navigation screencast with Screencast-o-matic or another tool of choice.

Update pre-workshop survey and send it out to participants – what is the timeline for sending it out and getting responses back?

The available survey is hosted by BCcampus. If you are hosting FLO at your institution you will need to create your own survey. Try creating one and post the link in the Sandbox.

Review survey responses to get a feel for what your participants already know/want to learn etc. You may choose to use this information to organize facilitation teams. Random assignment is another option for forming teams. In any case, post the team assignments in the schedule or as a separate resource.

Each facilitator creates an introductory post using more than just text (voiceover PowerPoint, VoiceThread, video, etc.)  to introduce themselves in the introductions forum. Each do different format with meta-level analysis at end. It’s best to post this before participants get access to the workshop

You are already asked to do this one as an  activity in FDO Week 1 - check!

If volunteer facilitator assistants will be participating in your FLO workshop, define their roles and provide some guidelines and tips for facilitation team (e.g. mini session) support.

Create a page with a table of roles and tasks. Hide the link from participant view since this resource is for viewing by those with facilitator (teacher) role only.

Book time in your schedules for FLO, and perhaps for office hours to be held in Skype each week.

If you know when you are teaching FLO, you could block the time.

And/or you could update your Moodle profile with your office hours (real or fake ones).

Ensure copyright permissions for all materials used in the workshop

If you plan to add anything new, that is!

Decide if you should hide Weeks 2-5 when the course opens so participants don't get overwhelmed. (Open early in Week 1)

Go to the FLO Sandbox and try "hiding" and "un-hiding units". Here's a video tutorial on how to do this.

He gets to units specifically about 2 min in.

Create a poll (Doodle poll or other tool of choice) and ensure link is visible early in the course so we can firm up a time for the live session to happen (The first session is usually Tues in Week 1.) OR select the date yourselves and post. Add this to course schedule, too

Go the the FLO Sandbox and link to the poll you created.

Work on PowerPoint slides or other resources to prepare for the Week 1 live session(s)

Check the SAMPLE slide decks that have been used for the Week 1 live sessions in FLO Facilitator Resources. Update these slides to suit yourself.

Facilitator decides how to organize the Building Community activity.

Go to the FLO Sandbox and edit the description in the appropriate forum.

Anticipate tools and actions FLO participants will need to discover and learn about.

Seed the "How do I..." FAQ with a post or two to model how your participants can contribute to this shared resource.
