FORUM: Online Community Building
Discussion: Online Community Building
The goal of this discussion is to explore the qualities, benefits, challenges and responsibilities associated with online community building. This discussion is linked to the following Learning Outcomes:
Learning Outcome | Self-Assessment Criteria |
---|---|
|
Reflect and discuss strategies for initially engaging learners in an online learning community. |
Instructions
Let's tackle this in two threads - additional instructions, details, and some helpful resources are posted to the "starter message" for each of the threads, but here is the gist of both threads:
Thread 1: Images of Community
Your task for thread 1 is to find or create 2 images that represent your ideas about online learning community.
We will create a media presentation of all our images. Unless one of you volunteers for the job, the ISWO facilitators will compile these and find some music to add (suggestions?)
Notes:
- The compilation will be shared on the open web
- Include copyright details along with any images you share
Thread 2: Response to Week 1 Readings
Your task for thread 2 is to post a reflection on some key questions arising from the readings about the challenges, facilitator roles/responsibilities, strategies, and technology possibilities for creating and supporting online communities. Check out the "starter post" for thread 2 for some specific questions to help guide your thinking.
Once you have posted your responses to both threads, review others' posts and look for themes that seem to link the various perspectives (you might want to jot your observations in your journal).
As you do this, reply to your colleagues - ask clarifying questions; gently challenge their thinking; offer ideas/additional examples to expand their thinking.
