I want to echo Mary's words of thanks for your contributions to this learning community. There's nothing like many minds and rich experiences to help wade through some of the issues, as well as the details around being open!

And speaking many minds, in this workshop we had 73 registrants from Canada, United States, Norway, Australia, and South Africa. However, because access to the materials and discussions did not require logging in, we also welcomed many more visitors who hopefully were able to take away some useful nuggets. We're compiling some of the participation data here, and the graph shows a steady stream of "guests".

Now, what happens next?

Tomorrow at noon Pacific you might want to take in this webinar: OER and Open Textbook Adoption and Sustainability, hosted by the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources. Clint Lalonde will be talking about the BCcampus Open Textbook Project.

Then January 8 - 21, 2014 we're planning an online "Adapting Open Textbooks" workshop here in SCoPE. We'll be sure to send along more details to you, but meanwhile mark those dates on your calendar and get in touch if you have questions (scurrie@bccampus.ca)

Thanks again everyone!

Thanks everyone for your participation this past week! You raised some interesting questions and offered brilliant responses about Creative Commons Licenses. And it was such a bonus having Paul Stacey join us to respond in depth to some of those questions. Thanks, Paul!

Hopefully the resources and activities this week allowed you to dig a little deeper into the mechanics and considerations of applying the licenses to your work.

Mary is back with us during week 3 to discuss institutional and individual readiness for a shift to open textbooks.

Good questions and good points!

One tip that really made me go ahhhhhh is that you can include content with a less open license as long as you are clear about it: e.g "Except where otherwise noted this textbook is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License".

There were some specific proposals to change/clarify NC licenses in the Creative Commons 4.0 versioning process. It takes a little time to pour through the proposals but it's well organized by proposal, pros, cons, comments, and treatment in 4.0: http://wiki.creativecommons.org/4.0/NonCommercial

Also, this answer in the FAQ may help to clarify:

Can I waive license terms or conditions?

Yes. You may choose to waive some license terms or conditions. Works licensed using CC but with additional permissions granted or conditions waived may be compatibly licensed with other works under the same license. The 3.0 licenses specifically permit this, and our CC+ protocol provides a mechanism for facilitating that grant.

Paul, we said "One day.." but we didn't specify which time zone :-D

I'd like to slide one more question in, if I may. If you're already onto your next project or running to catch another flight, I'll understand!

When choosing a license, I've never fully understood the implications of selecting a license jursdiction. I've tended to just leave the default "international" when using the license chooser. Does it mean if I'm in Canada I should select Canada?
