---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Mary, go ahead and take the mic
---------------------
Lindsay King Keyano: Some of my students might complain that there is unnecessary details
---------------------
Linden Lundback LC: I expect there are different levels in the course of study where some questions might require a more simple problem
---------------------
Sui Fai John Mak: simulated activity
---------------------
BJ: must come up with a strategy... not just a solution
---------------------
Mary Burgess: and possibly analysis of each strategy
---------------------
Jim S (Aurora College): The question "what strategies..." would throw my students who could find an answer
---------------------
Emma Uni of Portsmouth (UK): Could also raise discussion issues if you have non-drinking students ...
---------------------
simonne (LC): in striving for meaningful learning opportunities we need to assume that learners and facilitators do not have time for anything but authentic learning. So the focus is off rote learning and focusses on connecting the contant of a course with real connections in their lives
---------------------
G.B. Henderson: Technology could be injected to make the wine question more authentic: the wine was confiscated at the border; what would be the best online resources to replenish your wine stock? Consider price, value and shipping costs.
---------------------
aleslies: Do we need some introduction to the idea of assessment?
---------------------
Tim: Collaborative learning, assesment driven TS on line and/ or f2f .
---------------------
simonne (LC): example: geology exercise related to thermal conductivity: walk anywhere and collect soil samples; using geological charts, label the soil accordingly
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Put your initials
---------------------
Chris Jones: Use of rubrics in the assessment of case study responses and in other situations where the assessment attributes are essentially intangible/qualitative. CFJ
---------------------
Rob Goodall: Video feedback on salsa dance capability!
---------------------
Lindsay King Keyano: Create a computer program for Point of Sale terminal for video store.
---------------------
Mary Burgess: Peer evaluation of academic paper
---------------------
Diane VdG (RRU): peer assessments of competencies regarding learning outcomes
---------------------
Sui Fai John Mak: On the job learning and assessment
---------------------
Tracy Roberts: mine was traditional: MA thesis + defence experience
---------------------
Mary Burgess: you are Terry
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): video is powerful for individuals, my experience was a video group debrief and analysis of each contributor
---------------------
Moderator (Doug Hamilton): yes
---------------------
Tracy Roberts: yes
---------------------
Diane VdG (RRU): yes can hear you
---------------------
Moderator (Sandra (RRU)): go ahead terry

Ining Chao: yes
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): yes
---------------------
Mary Burgess: yes
---------------------
Diane VdG (RRU): yes can hear you Terry
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): carry on
---------------------
Annette: I just completed the Instructional Skills Workshop through Royal Roads University and experienced an absolute authentic learning opportunity and am continuing to apply this learning.
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): My very authentic experience as a student: Group project - we presented our learning management system re-design to the software company and got feedback, then went back to refine the design.
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): just a reminder to click the audio off when finished
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): sounds like it motivated you to teach as well
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): think i worked with that person once
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): no mic
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): click in the audio window
---------------------
lauralyn houle nlc: Third year University and I had an Aboriginal English instructor--who told me to write the way I talk...this freed me to write what I know and to rid myself of that H.S. message of "you will never use your english anyway."
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): @lauralyn What a neat story. Love it!
---------------------
Diane VdG (RRU): I agree with GB - when I taught in the K-12 system I found that to turn the 'power' of assessment over to the students through including them in the assessment process (especially adolescents) they found it much more relevant, and they took it much more seriously
---------------------
Barb - Keyano: I'm using portfolios for students to demonstrate learning. I also provide rubrics to my students prior to submitting assignments.
---------------------
lauralyn houle nlc: Yes Barb..we use rubrics also for the students-cuts out them guessing and gets down to them doing the learning and integrating of material.
---------------------
Chris Jones: Yes, rubrics are a lot more valuable if the learners can also use them as goals/ targets
---------------------
Emma Uni of Portsmouth (UK): I didn't realise you could give out work without a marking rubric!
---------------------
Barb - Keyano: I plan to get the students involved in developing the rubrics with me
---------------------
Rob Goodall: What's a rubric?
---------------------
Chris Jones: There are rubrics and rubrics!!!
---------------------
G.B. Henderson: Good for you, Barb. That's what I've found works best.
---------------------
aleslies: The whole slide is not showing up on the whiteboard. No scroll button
---------------------
Chris Jones: Wikipedia gives a decent explanation
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): Sylvia posted this in the SCoPE community
---------------------
Mary Burgess: aleslies can you see "Randall, Roberts and Rogers" in the bottom right?
---------------------
Rob Goodall: There is not a scroll button on the slides when you load them onto the whiteboard.
---------------------
aleslies: yes
---------------------
Mary Burgess: ok, that's the bottom of that slide
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): you can scroll in this window
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Here's the URL for page Sandra is showing: http://www.learningdesigns.uow.edu.au/tools/info/T1/VirtualRecords_sample/index.html
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): We can click on this site/page ourselves as well
---------------------
Mary Burgess: Wow, that's some hair Angela
---------------------
Rob Goodall: Very cool site, but an awful lot of small text to read online.
---------------------
Sui Fai John Mak: How would you assess the report?
---------------------
Jean Slick RRu: is the assignment submission traditional, or online?
---------------------
G.B. Henderson: Lots of online is traditional!
---------------------
Barb - Keyano: This adds life to a case problem. I like it.
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): yes
---------------------
Mary Burgess: We see Social Software page
---------------------
Moderator (Sandra (RRU)): http://ssa05.blogspot.com/2005/08/course-syllabus.html
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Great examples
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Want to see our brainstorm in colour?
---------------------
Barb - Keyano: Thanks for that. You sparked some new ideas for me.
---------------------
Mary Burgess: let's see it Sylvia!
---------------------
Gerry: A lot of instructors have little or no experience in assessing projects created with multimedia and/or web 2 tools.
---------------------
Mary Burgess: Cool!
---------------------
Emma Uni of Portsmouth (UK): I do like wordle
---------------------
Moderator (Sandra (RRU)): thanks Sylvia!
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): nicely done!
---------------------
Jim S (Aurora College): url for wordle?
---------------------
Barb - Keyano: You're an artist, Sandra.
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): http://wordle.net
---------------------
Gerry: http://wordle.net
---------------------
Jim S (Aurora College): thx
---------------------
T.Power: T Power thx have to run to a meeting-- very valuable session... terry
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Thanks for coming Terry! See you next time
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): don't be shy...
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): jump in and contribute some of your experiences
---------------------
simonne (LC): have to go - thanks very much to all
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Bye for now Simonne
---------------------
simonne (LC): Happy New year!
---------------------
Emma Uni of Portsmouth (UK): Not sure about authenticity, but I use a rubric for marking software - I get the students to mark each others' software using the same rubric, then their own using the same rubric & then I use the same one.
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Elevator pitch -- always more difficult than it sounds!
---------------------
Ining Chao: I thought it's only 30 sec
---------------------
G.B. Henderson: Having the students develop the rubric not only enhances the authenticity, it ensures that all students are aware of the criteria and have an opportunity to collaborate. They have to sell the validity of their ideas to get the others to accept them; they also have to evaluate their ideas against others.
---------------------
Emma Uni of Portsmouth (UK): The software, by the way, is meant to be designed to teach someone something! (More "training" than "education" as the package should allow a user to use it on their own. [We look at other aspects of elearning in different ways!]
---------------------
Gerry: Is the use of the technology assessed in that example as well?
---------------------
Emma Uni of Portsmouth (UK): Is that a question to me, Gerry? They have the choice of Flash/ HTML / Second Life for the build. Most tend to pick HTML
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Several people typing...
---------------------
Jim S (Aurora College): A multi-language keyboard design program I've just purchased comes with a 16 page "white Paper" on keyboard design where the seller outlines excellence criteria which they will use to give a star rating to user keyboards which they post on their website. That looks like a grading rubric to me.
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Chance of a life time. We'll solve your dilemmas!
---------------------
Sui Fai John Mak: Have been doing on-the-job training since 2000, and the learning and assessmment are based on the actual work
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Yay Barb
---------------------
Sui Fai John Mak: The learner actually prepared the training session, and delivered the training on the job with other employees
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): interesting
---------------------
Annette: I agree with Barb with regards to the reflective piece. When my teaching partner and I were facilitating our piece during the ISW our week was regarding reflecting. Great learning for both the participants and the facilitators
---------------------
Diane VdG (RRU): i LOVE wordle - SO fun! i've just been asked to create a visual presentation for this Thursday - and adding wordle bits will be perfect!
---------------------
Emma Uni of Portsmouth (UK): Or as well as a database in Moodle - how about using CiteUlike and/ or Merlot and/or Delicious to open it to the wider world?
---------------------
Lindsay King Keyano: Anything collaborative is great for for reflective learning. Perhaps have the students reflect on the collaborative aspect of the activity.
---------------------
Sui Fai John Mak: Each learner was required to present with Powerpoints (summary of report)
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Love this triage activity format.
---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): you will be sent to the SCoPE site when you close Elluminate window
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Yes, here a direct link to the forum: http://scope.bccampus.ca/mod/forum/view.php?id=5941
---------------------
G.B. Henderson: I'd like to see one added that encourages a diversity of answers...open-ended assignments.
---------------------
Gerry: Have to run - thanks for the session.
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Thanks for coming, Gerry! Stay warm
---------------------
G.B. Henderson: Don't ignore the emotive. Find a way to make it invoke emotion.
---------------------
Sui Fai John Mak: What are the pre-requisite knowledge and skills? How to bridge the gap through gap training/learning
---------------------
Emma Uni of Portsmouth (UK): Thanks - it's been very useful - but I'm afraid that it's getting late here in the UK & I need to go to bed!
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): Thanks for staying up so late for our session, Emma!
---------------------
G.B. Henderson: Sleep well. May authentic visions dance in your head.
---------------------
Sui Fai John Mak: How about induction?
---------------------
Rob Goodall: Thanks for the session. I have to go on to other things now.
---------------------
Sylvia Pratt Northern Lakes College: I must go. Thanks for a most informative session.
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): See you next time, Rob
---------------------
Carolyn Green-Olson LC: What was the name of the book again?
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie (BCcampus)): I've posted a heap of resources in our forum. Thanks to Sandra and Doug for compiling such a great list.
---------------------
Diane VdG (RRU): thanks so much everyone - gotta go - all the best for this new year
---------------------
Colleen: The reference list was great. I liked Thomas A. Angelo’s article “Doing Assessment As If Learning Matters Most “ where he shared “ten guidelines for assessing as if learning matters most”. He states: “If learning really matters most, then our assessment practices should help students develop the skills, dispositions, and knowledge needed to:
• Engage actively — intellectually and emotionally — in their academic work.
• Set and maintain realistically high, personally meaningful expectations and goals.
• Provide, receive, and make use of regular, timely, specific feedback.
• Become explicitly aware of their values, beliefs, preconceptions, and prior learning, and be willing to unlearn when necessary.
• Work in ways that recognize (and stretch) their present learning styles or preferences and levels of development.
• Seek and find connections to and real-world applications of what they’re learning.
• Understand and value the criteria, standards, and methods by which they are assessed and evaluated.
• Work regularly and productively with academic staff.
• Work regularly and productively with other students.
• Invest as much engaged time and high-quality effort as possible in academic work”.
