When I think back to (formal) online courses where I felt really motivated to learn and contribute here are some things that stand out:
- Instructor was present but not dominant, felt supported
- Group work (already mentioned by others)
- Authentic projects
- Acknowledgment by peers for my contribution to their learning/ project outcomes
- Flexibility in grading
- Good communication / sharing / authoring tools
- Emphasis on process
- Clear expectations
- No stupid sit down spit it out exams!

You really summarized very well. All the items you listed above are so important. One of the items you mentioned is "clear expectation". I would like to say that if you know the instructor`s expectations for class, it might be a candle in the dark and give you the power to hold that candle. I believe that it helps you to find the way of efficient communication with peers and instructors.
Team works is one of the best ideas for promoting adult motivation in online learning.
I think topic of the course is very important for me. As a self-directed learner, I need to know what/how I will learn and how I can use this information in my life.
Although Adults are complicated, they(I) know how i can learn and manage my learning process. Therefore, instructors shoudl be a person who not only teaches the topics but also communicates as a friend.
