Trauma-Informed Teaching Approach Implementation Plan
Create an trauma-informed teaching approach implementation plan. This assignment is meant to be self-reflective and address specific elements that you may need to incorporate or manage in order to carry out your plan. Part of the plan will also be to explain what a trauma-informed teaching approach is. We hope that you actually create a plan that you can/will carry out and will be useful for you.
Due Date: [INSERT DATE] but we will accept these until the last day of the course. However, only those submitted by the due date will be read and receive feedback.
Consider elements specific to you such as student demographics, campus and community resources (or sources of trauma), reluctant or resistant colleagues/management, and any subject specific concerns such as engaging with challenging material like Residential school records (History) or domestic violence incidents (Social Work). Ideally your implementation plan will identify 5 elements and discuss 5 trauma-informed approaches you could use.
In the hopes that this will be a useful document to you, like the self-care plan, make your elements and trauma-informed approaches as detailed as possible as you will be more likely to achieve them. Think of SMART goals - specific, measurable, achievable/attainable, realistic, and timely.
For example, I teach predominantly international students in my classes. Often these students are hoping to enhance their vocabulary, so I will teach them a word per class in exchange for them teaching me a word from their first language. This seems to put the students at ease as I am showing an interest in their language, positioning myself as a learner (often with humorous results as I struggle to pronounce new words), and showing by my "failures" that this is a safe learning environment.
Your assignment will include:
- Description of your teaching/work situation
- An implementation plan for your program or subject area
- Identification of any elements specific to your teaching situation such as student demographics, campus and community resources available, resistant colleagues, and any challenges in your subject area such as math anxiety.
- Details on how you will implement your trauma-informed approach
The assignment should be written and you can be as creative as you like adding any visual aids that you like.
