June 1, 2010 EPORTFOLIOS
Facilitators: Catherine Paul, Roselynn Verwoord
Presenters: Anne Scholefield, Cathryn Jackson
Moderator: Deb Carter

---------------------
Asif: How did you move from modest funding to 'revitalized' dedicated coordinators?

---------------------
Gary Hunt: Are they different from "learning communities"?

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: For those just rolling...our facilitators "UBC - Portfolio CoP" are huddled together and using one computer. Just in case you're wondering about the different voices :-)

---------------------
Derek: 8.09am, raining, just drinking coffee to cudgel my brain into action

---------------------
Derek: Nice to be here.

---------------------
Asif: @Gary -- do you define those as necessarily coursework-related?

---------------------
Derek: Hi Sylvia :)

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: Derek as in son who roasts that excellent coffee? yum

---------------------
Derek: No ONE solution . . .

---------------------
Derek: Why increased for students? Learning the technology?

---------------------
Asif: How did instructors respond to increased workloads?

---------------------
Gary Hunt: Asif: no, but maybe they have a well-defined end point rather than ongoing.

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: hi, sorry for being late

---------------------
amandah 1: How did you folks get buy-in especially given the increased workload for both faculty and students?

---------------------
Moderator (Deb Carter): Welcome, Nellie

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: Great questions coming in! Deb is combing the text chat as we go to bring questions forward.

---------------------
Asif: @Gary -- I'm playing with the distinctions btwn CoP & CoL myself -- not sure if they're two different beasts or the same beast applied in different contexts

---------------------
Derek: I presume you can justify the increased workload . .

---------------------
Derek: I think CoL and CoP are generally different. CoP's in FORMAL learning are rare and hard to nurture

---------------------
Asif: CoPs in general are hard to nurture -- in my view

---------------------
Derek: :)

---------------------
amandah 1: could you please elaborate what different individuals mean by COPs hard to nurture?

---------------------
Asif: Well -- increased workload, no extra pay -- why should I participate? -- basic 'whats in it for me' issues make CoP theory living up to practice ar rarity

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: I think the problem is sustaining community interest

---------------------
Derek: And conflict between institutional and personal goals

---------------------
amandah 1: Sounds like, too; a huge part of sustaining community is a) infrastructure and b) academic institution "walk the talk" by providing sufficient funds!

---------------------
Asif: @Derek -- or otherwise stated -- what role am I supposed to play in the CoP?

---------------------
Derek: The quote that I remember is this: "We set up these CoPs and soon after they diverge from our institutional objectives"

---------------------
Asif: heh - sweet -- so it became a REAL CoP

---------------------
Derek: Yeaaah

---------------------
Derek: 'Recognition' - yes an important feature in what you are describing

---------------------
Derek: [Hate the small text entry window]

---------------------
Asif: Would the UBC CoP allow discussions that go against the institutional grain?

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: @amandah so true. It can be a struggle to convince inst administrators of importance of CoPs in the organization

---------------------
Derek: Can they prevent it? If they try, will it not just go on underground.

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: any studies done ib the benefits to student?

---------------------
Asif: Which is what usually happens -- and the org loses out on valuable insight

---------------------
Derek: Hey that has been great!! thanks . .

---------------------
Moderator (Deb Carter): community

---------------------
Derek: Do CoP kind of feel in a group help eportfolios REALLY work and have life?

---------------------
Derek: CoP OR CoL: what helps eportfolios become REAL

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: Love this at-a-glance page http://www.ewenger.com/theory/

---------------------
Asif: Maybe its just context? CoP = org practice, CoL = personal development

---------------------
Derek: I'd surmise: attitude of class tutors has a big part of it?

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: Community of Inquiry is another one

---------------------
Derek: "Listening ot the learners" YES!!

---------------------
Derek: "Authentic" Please elaborate?

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: That was nice and clear

---------------------
Derek: Yes

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: real=authentic to some

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: RT Asif: How did you move from modest funding to 'revitalized' dedicated coordinators?

---------------------
Asif: How did you get the increase in funding?

---------------------
Derek: CoP:' by the people FOR the people' is one idea I think has merit. The perception of participatns of CARE from the leaders helps.

---------------------
Asif: thanks

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: any research on the benefits to students

---------------------
Asif: @Nellie -- great question

---------------------
Moderator (UBC - Portfolio CoP): Can people see this website?

---------------------
Derek: Can we find the links somewhere else?

---------------------
Moderator (UBC - Portfolio CoP): We'll put the links on the site afterwards

---------------------
Moderator (Meeting Moderator): http://efolio.educ.ubc.ca/

---------------------
amandah 1: yes, thanks

---------------------
Moderator (UBC - Portfolio CoP): Thanks Deb!

---------------------
Derek: ASIDE on wordpress: buddy press enables setting up of groups etc

---------------------
Derek: http://buddypress.org/

---------------------
Derek: This is so cool, esp npw NING has gone west

---------------------
Chrys: Derek: Thanks. interesting link.

---------------------
tomfullerton: http://efolio.educ.ubc.ca/resources/

---------------------
Derek: Got a bit distracted here: you have a 2 pp PDF of instructioins. In reality, has this been adequate and how have participatns coped?

---------------------
Asif: Can students use their own platforms (ie. does it have to be on the WrdPress site)

---------------------
Moderator (UBC - Portfolio CoP): http://efolio.educ.ubc.ca/blosweat/

---------------------
tomfullerton: examples: http://efolio.educ.ubc.ca/resources/examples-eportfolios/

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: Should now see Ash Misquith's e-porfolio

---------------------
Derek: Wow. Some good stuff here.

---------------------
amandah 1: I agree, @ Derek...it's one thing providing the resources, in reality, how do the students cope? Does it help that the students themselves will be future educators, and could benefit from learning these skills ...to apply in their future classrooms?

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: Tennis Artifiacts??

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: These are impressive portfolios / e-folios / eportfolios

---------------------
Moderator (UBC - Portfolio CoP): http://efolio.educ.ubc.ca/sarahwr/

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: yes, these are great for language learners

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: Love seeing "philosophy" straight away.

---------------------
Derek: @Amandah good question, what about all the things we do. I have a hunch that it is reflection that counts (among other things) and you can do a nice ep and NOT reflect and do a lousy one and DO reflect

---------------------
Moderator (UBC - Portfolio CoP): http://efolio.educ.ubc.ca/whyandhow/

---------------------
Chrys: If anyone wants to use Wordpress for portfolios and make them look less like blogs, this might be useful: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/04/29/ultimate-guide-to-using-wordpress-for-a-portfolio/

---------------------
amandah 1: While it makes practical sense about applying eportfolios in education; I am curious how this education strategy has transferred/translated in a different discipline like nursing?

---------------------
David Brear: I would like to share

---------------------
David Brear: http://mahara.org/

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: would you encourage wikis?

---------------------
Derek: Oh Oh, need to go to pay attention to domestic deadlines. Nice to hear voices, see you online. Signing off . . Thanks . . .

---------------------
amandah 1: thanks for sharing, Derek...

---------------------
Asif: Seeya Derek

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: That was a nice tour!

---------------------
Chrys: Derek: Great, thanks for the link!

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: cheerio for now, Derek

---------------------
amandah 1: yes, thanks very much for the tour

---------------------
David Brear: take a look at this http://ozgekaraoglu.wikispaces.com/

---------------------
Moderator (Deb Carter): @amandah 1: Cathryn is presenting next

---------------------
Moderator (Deb Carter): Cathryn is from UBC School of Nursing

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: @that's great, David

---------------------
amandah 1: oh dear, how did that happen...very new in participating in this way. wonderful that cathryn is next...can hardly wait

---------------------
Chrys: This is the sysatem we've been using in our pilot: http://www.nuventive.com/products_iwebfolio.html

---------------------
tomfullerton: Mahara is a more advanced system, more robust than WP

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: I think wikis are more appealing to young people as opposed to blogs

---------------------
tomfullerton: but the learning curve involved in Mahara is steeper

---------------------
David Brear: there is an Elluminate session on Mahara at 3:00 am in the morning

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: Mahara presented by whom, David?

---------------------
Asif: (How) are the e-folios evaluated?

---------------------
David Brear: here is the link http://www.learncentral.org/event/77102

---------------------
tomfullerton: 3AM PST works for me, I'm on EST :)

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: Have you tried wikis?

---------------------
David Brear: Nellie here is who "Mahara Eportfolios,” with host Carole McCulloch

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: thank you

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: I know Carole

---------------------
tomfullerton: I think you've provided some great support to your students here to get started creating a showcase portfolio

---------------------
amandah 1: lucky you @tom...

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: Oh cool! Carole McCulloch has done some great work in this area. I'm sure it will be recorded if at learncentral

---------------------
David Brear: has anyone tried 280 slides at http://280slides.com/

---------------------
Asif: Negotiated learning plan -- actually including student perspectives -- fantastic

---------------------
Asif: Is it a systemized process of negotiation?

---------------------
David Brear: Sylvia here is Carole's page in learncentral http://www.learncentral.org/profile/carolemcculloch

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: Thx David. Looks good.

---------------------
David Brear: uw :)

---------------------
amandah 1: what support is in place for both the instructors & students? It looks kind of work intensive in terms of documenting /providing input for each student by each instructor?

---------------------
David Brear: Amandah that ia what I was thinking as well

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: I imagine some complicated discussions and decisions around public versus private

---------------------
amandah 1: eg, are there expectations outlined to show minimal electronic documentation that provides consistency within and across the terms?

---------------------
Paul Beaufait: Would you like to elaborate on portfolios as an assessment tool, in terms of who does the assessment and what criteria they may use?

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: have you considered using facebook for PeP?

---------------------
Asif: Clear focus makes a huge difference in effective participation

---------------------
David Brear: Here's a rubrics for evaluating http://www.uvm.edu/~jmorris/rubricep.html

---------------------
tomfullerton: I would think that the clinical practice calls for a private / secure environment. Have similar issues around ethics in research. Nice to have public and private spaces controlled by students

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: I'm concerned about student interest. Are they doing what they are required or are they given the freedom to do things as they see it?

---------------------
Chrys: Nellie: I would be fearful of using Facebook for something like this in light of their many security/privacy issues.

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: @Chrys, that's what concerns me. We are dicatating the technology.

---------------------
Asif: @Nellie -- 'as they see it' creates institutional problems vis-a-vis evaluation

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: exactly, Asif

---------------------
tomfullerton: Encouraging to see the incorporation of reflection by nurses on their practice. Speaks to self-evaluation.

---------------------
Sylvia Currie Cathryn and Anne, I hope you'll join in the SCoPE discussion as well. Because I know there will be many more questions! :-)

---------------------
Chrys: I really appreciat the practical example here showing the applied skills the Nursing students need to master.

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: so why we are back to "let's keep it formal"

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: but provide our technology

---------------------
Asif: @Nellie -- I know -- I'm struggling with how to 'evaluate' informal learning

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: @tomfullerton controlled by students is ideal. Seems the ability to switch sections on and off an important feature

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: I use facebook groups for my students

---------------------
tomfullerton: @ sylvia, didn't catch the degree to which students have control over that. I like Mahara for the control it gives to students of their learning objects

---------------------
David Brear: how robust is it

---------------------
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: I can see how the groups in facebook -- which is specific to a course -- would help.

---------------------
Sylvia Currie: Probably so your data hosted at UBC + assured students continue to have access.

---------------------
amandah 1: @Asif & Nellie, yes, I am curious about addressing informal learning

---------------------
Sylvia Currie @tom yeah, not sure either. I'm interested in looking more closely at this and mahara

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: I think we will be seeing more informal learning in the future

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: @yes, David

---------------------
tomfullerton: Students' use of social networking to create their own learning networks

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: great question

---------------------
tomfullerton: pursue areas of passion

---------------------
amandah 1: @sylvia...yes, I would like to look more closely at mahara, too

---------------------
Sylvia Currie Just had response via twitter to earlier question about buy-in especially given increased workload for faculty and students. From @dendroglyph : Characterization issue, not increased workload. New fundamental skill for students, new professional requirement for teachers.

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: I will be installing Mahara in my Moodle

---------------------
David Brear: @Nellie that is cool

---------------------
Chrys: The students already do this among themselves... I've watched a friend's daughter studying for exams "with her classmates" via facebook. Very challenging to channel that to include instructor involvement

---------------------
tomfullerton: Nellie & Amandah, where are the 2 of you located?

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: @David, you're invited to join our PEP workshop in August

---------------------
David Brear: @Nellie thanks

---------------------
Chrys: Thanks to all of the presenters!

---------------------
David Brear: thanks as well

---------------------
Meg Goodine: We've been experimenting with mahara a bit, You can check out my link at: https://cranberry.kwantlen.ca/mahara/view/view.php?id=515

---------------------
Paul Beaufait: Yes, thank you all.

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: great presentation

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: thank you

---------------------
amandah 1: I am at kwantlen, Surrey BC and we are currently in the process of implementing an online BSN course and exploring the use of Mahara. Mucho gracias for the informative presentation and everybody who participated! great dialogue!

---------------------
Sylvia Currie And excellent moderating, Deb!

---------------------
Meg Goodine: Thanks everyone

---------------------
Amy S: Thanks!

---------------------
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: What I have found that in software Elgg systems -- where students can make portfolios at Athabasca University -- there can be a "final evaluation" -- in the end of the program -- but along the way there are opportunities to "organize the entries made during the master DE program.

---------------------
David Brear: @Meg hi :)

---------------------
Asif: thanks all -- hits just the points Ilve been dealing with in my 'informal' learning

---------------------
Sylvia Currie conversation continues http://scope.bccampus.ca

---------------------
Gary Hunt: Thanks for the great session!

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: @Assif :)

---------------------
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: Thanks for all the entries and the Session.

---------------------
Asif: Seeya round Nellie

---------------------
Sylvia Currie Thanks so much!

---------------------
Nellie Deutsch: bye for now

---------------------
tomfullerton: Thank you all !
