---------------------
Moderator (Leva Lee): good orientation to buttons/functions!
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): That whiteboard is a thing of beauty :-)
---------------------
Bonnie from BC: My students are global (China, Japan, Dubai) and we have asyncronous continuous registration
---------------------
Bonnie from BC: (grade 9)
---------------------
Moderator (Tracy Roberts): continuous registration can be a challenge to create community i bet?
---------------------
Bonnie from BC: I haven't found the solution yet.
---------------------
Bonnie from BC: (my grade 9's are on facebook a lot)
---------------------
Jules Naismith 1: I hope you are parked at the time of this picture!! :O)
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): :)
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): sure, tracy
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: It is asking to sign on for it.
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): hm, maybe just the link would be better
---------------------
Sue Wolff: says the video is private
---------------------
Moderator (Tracy Roberts): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea4c_yuH2f8
---------------------
Houston: it's private
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): Seems the video is private
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): ooo, it's one of THOSE videos
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): we are making these glitches on purpose so you know what to expect when planning :)
---------------------
Sue Wolff: I think fear and unfamiliarity with the technology is a barrier to faculty doing this
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: Black and white, so 1950's.
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): @Jeffrey you can click the pull down menu to choose fine colour
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): (but I like the 50s look!)
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: Most of the adults I teach are incapable of this at the beginning of the class. This would be a big turn-off for them . . .
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): my face is naturally black & white
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: I would have mass dropping of the class.
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: Love the black and white.
---------------------
Sue Wolff: c then D
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): i understand, Jeffrey. we have a LOT of students like that
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): Depends on the circumstances though.
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: Will there be a discussion about ideal vs. real (as in really possible)?
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): yes, absolutely
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: ME
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): the intro must be geared to the audience
---------------------
Andrea: I liked the text only, but I also liked the vid
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: Reality-check -- my leaners are only capable of text
---------------------
Andrea: The PPT to me was OTT
---------------------
Andrea: over the top
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: Can we speak?
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): below the chat
---------------------
Sally Walters: the students might not be able to produce tis but i think they would appreciate seeing D from the instructor
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): good pt. Sally
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): What do you teach, Jeffrey?
---------------------
Sue Wolff: that is a matter of what you require vs what you model and encourage
---------------------
Sue Wolff: from the faculty
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: The irony, is that I teach principles and practices of online course creation and instructional design
---------------------
Sally Walters: made me want to immediately redo all of mine lol
---------------------
Jules Naismith 1: connecting internet speed to be considered also, i.e many northern BC is still modem!
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: they attend the class knowing that they are shaky with technology
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: and that is one of the reasons they take the class
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: I can imagine them doing this after a session; perhaps this would be a great activity to create and model for the learners. In other words, do this as the instructor and in the process show them how this is done?
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): Here's a good site if you want to keep it easy and short: http://12seconds.tv/
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): you might want them to experience the difference between a text introduction vs. a telephone intro to think about the differences between text & audio
---------------------
Sally Walters: how do you send C out to students - email, moodle?
---------------------
Andrea: We also have huge copyright constraints - every picture would have to be cleared by our copyright specialist before being placed in a course
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: We like easy to use.
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: :-)
---------------------
Sue Wolff: Our faculty are also not necessarily technical practitioners, and they are typically NOT digital natives.
---------------------
Andrea: they do use ppt, sometimes really badly
---------------------
Andrea: <shudder>
---------------------
Bob V: I like to get as close to ftf as possible - since the students won't be tested on the intro., the video intro gives a warm, friendly image of the instructor.
---------------------
Sue Wolff: Tom Kuhlman teaches amazing things to do with PPt http://www.articulate.com/rapid-elearning/powerpoint-for-e-learning/
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): I find faculty are often willing to take baby steps, try something just a bit MORE each semester (with help)
---------------------
Sue Wolff: Are those headlines in the Mag ap linkables?
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): @Sue thanks for the Kuhlman link. Some great ideas there.
---------------------
Sally Walters: cool!
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): Tracy mentioned the 1-week 'sandboxing'. Here's a direct link: http://scope.bccampus.ca/mod/forum/view.php?id=6301
---------------------
Andrea: @sue - do you use Articulate? I worked for the bc prov govt and they did a whole training program for welfare workers using articulate
---------------------
Andrea: (Very slick)
---------------------
Sue Wolff: no, but Tom was a colleague in my Masters class, and he teaches so much tthrough his blog
---------------------
Robin: [distraction: Olympic torch passing by right now]
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): easy Easy EASY
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): This one just cracks me up!
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): I was amazed how easy, seriously
---------------------
Sue Wolff: You can also create your own channel w/ YouTube and publish to it with its own permissions
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): interesting, Sue
---------------------
Jules Naismith 1: I use Jing Podcasts
---------------------
Sue Wolff: me too Jules
---------------------
Sue Wolff: YES
---------------------
Jules Naismith 1: easy easy
---------------------
Robin: jing is awesome!
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: Jing is fantastic.
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): the hardest part of YouTubing is getting used to seeing yourself on video. but worth the effort to get over it.
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): most excellent. I live Jing
---------------------
Sue Wolff: I love Jing for screen captures in motion
---------------------
Jules Naismith 1: don't purchase the upgrade as the free software is more than adequate .. limit is 5 minutes
---------------------
Moderator (Leva Lee): Jing's great...need to upgrade thou
---------------------
Candice M: Voicethread is seriously Awesome!
---------------------
Candice M: And so easy!
---------------------
Sue Wolff: We used it for introducing the Blackboard support team, even w/o commentsaccepted
---------------------
Candice M: I do but need to set it up real quick
---------------------
Bonnie from BC: We avoid anything where students have to input Id information that could be traced to them Huge privacy conerns on US servers.
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): What age are your students, Bonnie?
---------------------
Sue Wolff: and all the faces w/ audio around the edges were the support team and what they do
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): We've used voicethread for intros at SCoPE. Maybe we should embed this one in the SCoPE forum so we can all try it out: http://voicethread.com/#q.b14512.i8962
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: Will you have this presentation (or even better, the links), available in the SCoPE session after this webinar?
---------------------
Bonnie from BC: Middle School .. Fraser Valley Distance Educataion.
---------------------
Jeffrey Keefer: TY
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): good idea, Sylvia
---------------------
Candice M: I have my mic sorry it took so long
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): @ Jeffrey: yes
---------------------
Sue Wolff: ME Too!
---------------------
Sue Wolff: I referred a bit of our training to her site
---------------------
Robin: tracey could you paste that link in chat?
---------------------
Robin: thx
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): Nik Peachy also has good tool ideas -- with descriptions on how he has used them
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): Jane Hart: http://www.c4lpt.co.uk/
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): thanks sylvia
---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): Nik Peachey http://nikpeachey.blogspot.com/ He is an English teacher so has lots of ideas using voice and visuals
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): this is really important, esp. if your learners are not wildly motivated participants
---------------------
Sue Wolff: all of these imply a value on the social aspect of learning and community. Interactivity, building trust, and getting to know is relevant
---------------------
Sally Walters: i include a readiness for online learning tool
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): using Moodle's Q&A forum can work well for this
---------------------
Sue Wolff: good for introducing group project assignments
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): yep, good for team starting
---------------------
Sue Wolff: especially good investment of time if cohort or team will have to invest major time together
---------------------
Andrea: very very good points
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): the profile is easy to do & really does make a difference
---------------------
Sue Wolff: We included a breakout session on social presence and engagement, offering participation points for adding a picture or choosing any of the tech integration challenges to posts in the online conference
---------------------
Robin: good point
---------------------
Candice M: I have motivated instructors to create a profile widget in D2L!
---------------------
Sue Wolff: it was a professional development conference
---------------------
Moderator (Leva Lee): a great teaching moment!
---------------------
Sue Wolff: One I had was asking people in the PD conference to try embedding a link in a post, but found out later in their student roles, it is not allowed.
---------------------
Sue Wolff: bad to put people on the spot and force dichotomization
---------------------
Sue Wolff: nope
---------------------
Sally Walters: don't like this one too much
---------------------
Tony: Too much psychological probing will make people withdraw
---------------------
Moderator (Gina Bennett): good pt. tony
---------------------
Moderator (Leva Lee): maybe too trite?
---------------------
Moderator (Tracy Roberts): agree leva
---------------------
BJ: Nice... Gina... (#2)
