---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): cool

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): BTW, we are using the new Elluminate v9.6 that for us Snow Leopard OS folks works really smoothly now...

---------------------
Moderator (Andrew): Welcome Christina

---------------------
Christina Merl: Hi everyone!

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): yes, I notice a big diffence in Snow Leopard

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): does not hang up like it did b4

---------------------
Gina Bennett COTR: hi Jennifer!!! (from COTR)

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1: Good morning everyone. Penny

---------------------
Jennifer Hibbert: hi Gina,

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1: Can we have the web link for the film...

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA) to Randy LaBonte, neil smith, Sylvia Currie, Andrew: Andrew, your "away" button is still clicked

---------------------
Moderator (Andrew): Sylvia will bring it up and we'll share the link with you

---------------------
Gina Bennett COTR: i wonder if we need to stop the video to improve the sound?

---------------------
Moderator (Andrew): Thanks Wendy

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA) to Randy LaBonte, neil smith, Sylvia Currie, Andrew:

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1: Thanks

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte) to amy nlc: Hi, Amy. Good to see you here!

---------------------
amy nlc: Hi Sorry I'm lat

---------------------
amy nlc: late...with an e (-:

---------------------
House of Learning NWCC: We watch just the first 2 parts right

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: video is working for me - all good

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): and press play lower left if it does not automatically launch

---------------------
Paul Stacey: nice music, go Neil go

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): and press play lower left if it does not automatically launch

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: the music is great!

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: what is it?

---------------------
DeirdreB: Skiing must be from BC Lol

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): nice transition!

---------------------
Gina Bennett COTR: ok!

---------------------
DeirdreB: lost video?

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): we shut it off

---------------------
Paul Stacey: nice quality

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1: Great in Kamloops...

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: thanks Neil!

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): how did you get from ski to sport jacket so fast?

---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): very clever

---------------------
Sue L.: Like the focus on passion! Very interested in how we 'teach' that

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): lol

---------------------
Gina Bennett COTR: BOPPPS? hm, memorable

---------------------
Sue L.: ISW training was very prominent at the HIgher Colleges of Technology where I taught for 5 years

---------------------
Paul Stacey: and build relationship/trust between students

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1: In my experience faculty pay limited attention to the Bridge-in. Can you comment on some of the common errors that faculty make regarding Bridge-In?

---------------------
Moderator (Andrew): Great question. I'll get Neil to speak to it after the video

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): it will start the intro again

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): so click on the bridging tab on the left

---------------------
Paul Stacey: love that learning from each other concept

---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): That's a nice strategy -- like the "one thing that's unique"

---------------------
Gina Bennett COTR: like the focus on 'trust'... in my experience, teaching requires a very high level of trust. with trust, you can (kind of) lead your students anywhere

---------------------
Paul Stacey: Expect having fun - now there's a teaching strategy!

---------------------
Sue L.: I liked this line: ""I really don't think the specifics of all the information is as important as students learning to recognize or discover answers for themselves"

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): Doing more isn't better ... mantra to design by!

---------------------
LaDonna: creating own models

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1: Students really value review, structure and organization.

---------------------
LaDonna: review, helps to pull up what was learned last time

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: I like that these faculty are clearly continuing to learn from students as well as vice versa

---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): @Wendy Yes! Seems we've been brought up wiht that 'keep busy' strategy. I remember stack of worksheets in elementary. Ugh.

---------------------
DeirdreB: Students like structure...

---------------------
LaDonna: role of anticipation in learning

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): so true

---------------------
Gina Bennett COTR: yes, structure is important & that can be a problem with group work if not enough structure is provided

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): we stopped the video

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): yes

---------------------
Paul Stacey: was great

---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): Hope everyone was finished watching?

---------------------
amy nlc: Missed only the last few seconds

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): all is good

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1: Lost the last 1 minute.

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): apologies

---------------------
Jennifer Hibbert: sorry, no I don't have a question, just getting used to the technology

---------------------
Moderator (Randy LaBonte): Apologies, all. I have to head to Victoria. See you online in SCoPE

---------------------
Paul Stacey: bye randy

---------------------
Sue L.: need to value connections beyond the content

---------------------
amy nlc: Relationship building also so important in DL environments - sometimes more difficult

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): SO true

---------------------
DeirdreB: I encourage focusing attention through bridging

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1: I agree, I hope we can re-focus so that we build the trust and tell students why the content is important.

---------------------
Gina Bennett COTR: dl

---------------------
Gina Bennett COTR: dl = distance learning (for the uninitiated)

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): distance learning

---------------------
House of Learning NWCC: Fewer individuals need the validation of a degree as much as personal validation of their value within the things they/do learn (Glen)

---------------------
Jennifer Hibbert: thanks Gina

---------------------
Moderator (Andrew): Great comment, Glen

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): nice one, Glen

---------------------
Paul Stacey: Having learning buddies works too

---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): PRESENCE is so important

---------------------
amy nlc: How do you match up the buddies?

---------------------
Christina Merl: As a matter of fact, a lot of teachers suffer from burnout.. The teacher who was presented as always energetic, smiling, paying attention etc. in the beginning of the video immediately had me think of this "challenge"... My question: how can teachers avoid "burnout" and still connect to students on an emotional level, be energetic, pay attention etc. etc.?

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: We find having a requirement to post a bio in asynch enviros is important - as well as other opportunities for social presense like a cafe forum.

---------------------
Peter CLEBC: we have found buddies work well when they are with close on the learning curve cohorts

---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): Thanks Wendy, we'll let you take the mic next

---------------------
amy nlc: Thanks

---------------------
Ginny Cathcart: I use Johnsoin and Johnson cooperative learning group model to establish base groups

---------------------
Peter CLEBC: to big a gap of learning buddies can lose connection between the two

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: We also do informal assessment using a "critical friend" model - learners paired up to give each other feedback.

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): my comment is similar, so you can move on, Sylvia

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): yes

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): similar to PD sessions... conferences.. sitting with friends, missing key learning possibilities

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): can you shut down Neil's video for speed

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: lost video but not audio of the video?

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: there we go

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: it's back

---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): Thx Wendy.

---------------------
DeirdreB: Frequent issue is too many outcomes

---------------------
LaDonna: fewer concepts but deeper

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: too many outcomes = too hard to assess

---------------------
Barbara Dieu (Brazil): did not load here...having pbs with the connection

---------------------
DeirdreB: Transition from teacher goals to learning goals is key

---------------------
Moderator (Andrew): Hi Barbara, did you try the link to the smaller video?

---------------------
Paul Stacey: balancing depth of outcomes to be achievable an interesting challenge

---------------------
Barbara Dieu (Brazil): yes

---------------------
amy nlc: I did not get through this time. Much slower

---------------------
Gina Bennett COTR: so many instructors feel (overly?) attached to covering the material rather than achieving outcomes

---------------------
Christina Merl: can you hear me?

---------------------
Barbara Dieu (Brazil): hope it is going to be embedded in the forum

---------------------
Christina Merl: Sorry, somehow there are technological problems..

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1: I don't have Neil's Video showing.

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: agreed Gina - when we develop courses with faculty here, we often find they already have their content, but not outcomes.

---------------------
Moderator (Sylvia Currie): Christina, we didn't hear you. We''ll give you another chance!

---------------------
Moderator (Andrew): We'll make sure it's accessible for you, sorry.

---------------------
House of Learning NWCC: or a sabbatical . . .

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1: Found him

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: Very interested in people's answers to the third question...

---------------------
Christina Merl: Sorry, I seem to have problems with tech here.. but thanks for taking up the topic1

---------------------
Gina Bennett COTR: sorry, gotta go (flying to ETUG!) but have appreciated this session.

---------------------
DeirdreB: Bulemic learning- stuff info, throwup on exam and no nutrition

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): lol

---------------------
Moderator (Andrew): Ha

---------------------
amy nlc: LOL

---------------------
Barbara Dieu (Brazil): good metaphor

---------------------
LaDonna: so true Deirdre - sad but true

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): I need to use that quotation, Deirdre!

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: I have a knee-jerk reaction to outcomes that start with "Students will understand..."

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1 to Barbara Dieu (Brazil): Welcome Barbara so glad you joined us.

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: how do you assess understanding?

---------------------
Christina Merl: @DeirdreB -- so true! Would you like to tell your full name?

---------------------
Ginny Cathcart: I have another meeting. thank you for a great seminar

---------------------
DeirdreB: feel free its mine Wendy

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): hard to do in mandated provincial curriculum, unfortunately

---------------------
DeirdreB: Deordre Bonnycastle

---------------------
Christina Merl: Am glad this chat exists as audio does not really work well for me. Sorry again for not having been able to speak earlier!

---------------------
Barbara Dieu (Brazil) to Penny Heaslip 1: pity I did not manage to log in before - my connection is not good today

---------------------
DeirdreB: Mary I feel same way about understand

---------------------
LaDonna: In adult learning workshops I see a lot of content delivery rather than real learning

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: RRU

---------------------
Barbara Dieu (Brazil): how can we measure real learning @LaDonna?

---------------------
Christina Merl: Maybe I missed that but did you measure the learning?

---------------------
Christina Merl: @DeirdreB: thanks!

---------------------
LaDonna: delivering content doesn't mean anyone actually "learned" anything - i think it requires interaction with content, each other, instructor

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: that sounds great - sorry, I'm jumping ahead a bit

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: exactly

---------------------
amy nlc: Sometimes the model is "I've delivered the content - the onus is on the student to implement in their lives.

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: totally fine - thanks

---------------------
LaDonna: yes amy

---------------------
Mary Burgess - RRU: this was really great, thanks Neil and all

---------------------
amy nlc: Thanks everyone

---------------------
DeirdreB: Thanks Neil great videos

---------------------
Christina Merl: Thanks a lot.. hope next time will be better in terms of technology for me!

---------------------
Penny Heaslip 1: This has been the best session yet. Thanks Sylvia, Neil and Andrew.

---------------------
Paul Stacey: Neil, great to hear the passion in your presentation - modeling what you are teaching!

---------------------
LaDonna: thank you Neil and Andrew and this is great to engage each other

---------------------
Barbara Dieu (Brazil): yes

---------------------
Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier (StFX/UniSA): excellent, thanks!

---------------------
Barbara Dieu (Brazil): what about the video, Sylvia?

---------------------
Christina Merl: Perfect -- thanks!
