Glossary: Commonly Used Words in UDL
A

Action & Expression

One of the three principles of UDL, this principle is based on the strategic network realized as how learners plan, organize, and initiate purposeful actions in their environment

Affective

This refers to the neural network associated with engagement. These areas of the brain are located primarily in the centre of the brain.

E

Engagement

One of the three principles of UDL, this principle is associated with the affective network - how learners monitor their internal and external environment to set priorities, to motivate, and to engage learning and behaviour).

Executive Function

Executive function is the management system of your thinking, and can be described as a set of mental skills that include flexible thinking, self-control, and working memory. These skills are used every day to learn, work, and manage daily life.

R

Recognition

This includes the areas of the brain that recognize patterns, memories and is generally the back part of the brain

Representation

One of the three principles of UDL, this principle is aligned to the recognition network - how learners sense and perceive information in their environment and transform it into usable understanding

S

Strategic

The strategic neural networks refer the areas known as the prefrontal cortex.
