Christie, what a deliciously provocative request :-) I'm sure you didn't intend to set me thinking about the importance of formatting in knowledge sharing, but that's what you've done. Thanks!

First, let me say that I attended the eLIVE session and found the sidebar chat by participants fascinating, but very distracting. It prevented me from giving my full attention to what George was saying and showing.

But what was being said was very rich, and well worth our attention now that the live session is over. The text archive of the chat reflects what people know, or want to know, or want to help others to know. So it seems to me that, by presenting the archive to us, Sylvia is facilitating knowledge sharing.

The problem, though, was in the formatting. The original lump of alphabet and symbols was not easily comprehensible. Does this demonstrate that there can be no knowing unless someone intervenes and imposes structure (thanks, Sylvia)? Does this validate the role of educators and producers of knowledge management systems?

  • Before you forget about 2006 completely, dip into the open SCoPE discussion on the Accessibility of eLearning which took place in December. See how the 300+ members of our larger SCoPE community use our site to address key issues in education. Note that no password is required to join these regularly scheduled seminars. The next is on Knowing Knowledge and begins Jan 10th, so check out the SCoPE Homepage for details.

  • The next UCIPD meeting will take place at Douglas College on Friday, March 16th. The previously scheduled November gathering was snowed out, but the Douglas team is game to try again! To help people use the UCIPD space in SCoPE, I prepared a handout with screenshots that I was planning to hand out at Douglas College. I was also going to give a demo on a large screen.

Since I didn't get the chance to hand anything out or show you in person, I'm just attaching my doc with screenshots, and hope you can print it off and follow along. Sorry the doc is a little large, but I hope you can manage to download it and follow the instructions.

Please let me know if I can help. In addition, our SCoPE Co-ordinator, Sylvia Currie, is available if you have general questions about this Moodle platform and its functionality. You can send private messages to Sylvia or myself (or any other SCoPE member) by clicking on our names anywhere on the site.

We're all disappointed that snowstorms caused the cancellation of our planned meeting at Douglas College this month.  We know it would have been a great day and we thank our Douglas College colleagues for all their work. We're looking into re-schuling early in 2007, and will send out information as soon as we have found a location and a date.

In the meantime, we're setting up this forum to capture some of the information and resources which we would have shared at Douglas. Please post your news, resources, issues...and of course your wild stories of how you survived the blizzards.

Hello Everyone:

SFU's Learning and Instructional Development Centre has a small library of books and other media related to teaching and learning.  We're trying to think of ways to promote its use, and one idea is to invite faculty  members to join a reading group once a semester, or so.  LIDC would consider purchasing a number of copies of a selected text for ciculation, and we would invite faculty to co-facilitate, while we attend to the logistics (room, refreshments).  The questions of how we might choose readings and get faculty buy-in are big ones! Has anyone tried this?  Is there a better way of encouraging use of the library? What are your thoughts?
