At 16, I had conquered most sports. When a new friend, Dean, suggested snowboarding, I figured why not. While I was not overly excited about the idea of hurtling down the side of a mountain in -30 weather at god knows what speed, the brilliant teenager in me assumed I would naturally excel at yet another sport.
My first time waiting for the chair, I had on a brave face, exuding confidence. The chair swung mightily around the corner and, just as I imagined, I sat down right on cue and we cruised up the hill. Chair conquered.
My first 'carve' seemed smooth and with a couple more swerves, I knew my athletic instincts were kicking in. And then it happened. The next turn was a little faster, a little bumpy but I fought through it. Conquered! Oops that next turn came quick. A little wobble. My speed picked up and suddenly turning was an afterthought and my only thought was, 'Im not sure how to stop this thing'. Luckily my face knew how. In a second, I face-planted and proceeded to slide down the remaining half of the run using my face as a brake.
When I got up I was pumped that all my arms and legs were still working. A little bumpy but pretty good for my first run. My friends were waiting at the bottom and took a picture of my first 'successful' run. Although, I couldn't understand why everyone else was staring at me in horror.
Here's the thing about -30 degree weather. You cant feel ANYTHING, and that includes blood pouring down your face. As the picture will show, I didnt exactly conquer the mountain or snowboarding in general, but I did continue to get on that chair and had a great day.
The downside of the having a hot cocoa by the fireplace at the end of the day is that your body and face unfreezes and the pain becomes a whole new challenge.
Thanks for your story. It was very fun to read!
Trigger - Dean suggesting snowboarding
Purpose - to conquer all sports! (a noble endeavour ;)
Problem - Mastering the snowboard
Quest - How to descend down a hill; used the board to turn slow down, and stop. Sub quest: does the face make for a good brake?
Resolution - the hero makes it down the hill successfully, a little worse for wear (or a lot); skills gained
btw - I've never tired snowboarding but when my brother did, he was so banged up that he said he should have just stayed home and had someone beat him with a stick!
