The English language is a difficult language to learn. It’s not considered the hardest language to pick up, but it’s definitely not the easiest. And with English being one of the most commonly spoken languages around the world, improving your skills can only help give you a boost in life. And it doesn’t matter if you’re a native English speaker or if you are learning English as a Second Language (ESL), you can benefit from learning how to improve English skills.
This article goes over some of the most common problems that people trying to learn English encounter as like dissertation editor, and even offers some suggestions for breaking through these problem areas. Utilize the strategies outlined below, and you will greatly improve your English skills over time.
Problem: Lack of a Vocabulary
The words you utilize represent your vocabulary. And if you don’t have a vocabulary, well, you won’t be able to say much – communication will be hard, if not impossible; your speech will be choppy and slow as you frustratingly try to express your thoughts. Languages use words to form expressions to communicate information. And without the proper knowledge of words, well, you mise well be speaking a foreign language.
The English language, as with any language, has thousands and thousands of words. Nobody knows all of the words that exist, there are just too many. But you don’t need to know all of the words in order to effectively communicate. For example, many experts believe that you only need to know about 800 words to effectively communicate in the English language. Eight hundred words is not that many words when you think about it, and if you can speak the language at least a little, I’m willing to bet you know a whole bunch of them.
Improving your vocabulary seems like it should be easy, all you have to do is memorize a bunch of words. Well, memorizing the words is the easy part… Remembering what they mean is much harder! Forgetting the meaning of a word is one of the most common problems there is in trying to improve your vocabulary.
Solution: Improve Your Vocabulary
Improving your English vocabulary is one sure fire method of learning how to improve English, especially if you are struggling with a poor vocabulary! There are many methods of improving your English vocabulary, such as playing word games. But one of the easiest methods is to simply make a list. This is something you should do on a regular basis, at least weekly. On this list, I want you to write down 25 words that you are unfamiliar with. You can get these words from books or articles you read, from conversations you have, and even words you don’t understand that you hear on TV or the radio.
Your list should include 25 words along with the definition of each word written next to it. Study these twenty-five words for one week, breaking them down into groups of five. On day one, study the first five words on your list. Memorize the words and their definitions, and try to work them into your conversations throughout the day. On day two, study the next set of five words on your list. At the end of the day, try to write down the five words from day one and the definitions. On day three, focus on the thirds set of five words, and then at the end of the day try to write down the words from day one and two. Day four continues with the fourth set of five words, followed by trying to recall all the words from days one, two and three. Day five is focused on learning the last set of five words, followed by writing all the previous twenty words from days one through four. Day six and seven simply write all twenty five words down and their definitions. Go back and re-memorize any you cannot remember.
Take your time and put effort into the exercise described above and you will improve.
Problem: English Speaking Skills
When first learning a language, most people are not able to fluently carry on a conversation. In fact, most people have a hard time with basic communication. Most people learning a new language lack the basic vocabulary and/or grammar skills required to carry on a decent conversation, and a few even have accent problems to add to the list. You can follow the tips in this article and in others to improve your vocabulary and grammar. But all the study in the world won’t improve your conversational English skills. That is because one needs to learn how to apply the classroom study to real world situations.
Solution: Improve English Speaking
One of the easiest and fun ways to learn the English language is to watch movies. Movie’s provide a convenient means of hearing English words spoken out loud. Not only that, but you get to hear how the language is used in particular circumstances, and how the words and expressions are used to convey feelings. When you are watching a movie alone, listen to how the actors are speaking the sentences. Then pause the movie, and speak the same phrase out loud. Listen to yourself, how do you compare to the actor? Try to mimic the actor and repeat it as they say it.
Another exercise you can perform is to read an article or a book out loud to yourself. Speak each word clearly and loudly so that you can hear yourself speak. Pay attention to how you are speaking the sentences – where you are placing emphasis and accents, what order you use the words in, and even your overall tonality. As you read the word and speak it out loud, you will be getting more comfortable with the English language. To continuously improve, you should read a book out loud to yourself for 5-10 minutes everyday. It’s not much time, get in a habit of doing this before bed.
Problem: Lack of Field Practice
The absolute best way to learn English is to practice speaking it with other English speakers. Being in conversations with others and interacting in an authentic manner is the single best way to improve your English skills. If you can immersive yourself, you should do so.
For the first time in your life, you have an excuse to watch more movies. Watching movies in English is a great way to learn English. Watching Americans speak is the only way you are going to pick up the “Americanisms” in the way they speak. These things are almost impossible to pick up by reading about them. To learn them, you have to experience them in the moment.
Leverage the internet and find an English speaking chat buddy. You can find a chat room or possibly even a buddy you can talk to via Skype. There are even people who would be glad to chat or Skype with you just to help you learn. If you aren’t lucky enough to have a friend or classmate that speaks English, chatting on the internet is the next best thing.
Utilize any English speaking friends, coworkers, or classmates as much as you can. If you know somebody that is fluent with the English language, talking with them is a great way to learn. The best method of learning is to simply have conversations. Talk about various topics and be inquisitive. Get comfortable talking about everything from the weather to politics. If you can switch between small talk and deep conversations you are well on your way to becoming a great English speaker.
Practice These Tips
There are many other pitfalls and traps that cause people problems when learning English for the first time or when learning how to improve English, but the three listed above are the most common culprits. If you know these pitfalls and learn how to avoid them, every aspect of your English will improve with practice. With consistent practice, you will be as fluent as a native English speaker in no time.

Sylvia and I just had a chat about the Moodle site, communication with participants and the participant experience. One of the items was this blog. It's a new approach for the FLO Design workshop and we are wondering about a few things.
1. How does it display?
2. What will its function be?
3. Will the entries be linear and structured or organic and emergent?
The idea that we are starting with is that this is a place for us to model sharing our process and thoughts. We know that any shift in teaching style can be tricky, messy and sometimes feel icky so we are putting ourselves in this space of creativity too. I am totally excited to see how this evolves. I tend to have a big picture in my mind, then allow for flow. How might others react to that?
We are hoping that participants will join our conversations
To do is to be. Socrates
To be is to do. Sartre
do be do be do Sinatra
Just figuring out that to add an entry you hit blog group
This is our process of ideating the design for this workshop. We invite you to peruse and comment as you wish.
I see we are able to blog about the wiki as well - hmm, this could be a way to discuss the contents, share ideas, before formalizing the final summary.
Let me know what you think.
This is a test
