(very lightly edited by Sylvia Currie to correct typos, etc)
Heidi Piltz: I'm in - I think (my first time doing this on Elluminate!)
Sylvia Currie (@currie): Hi Heidi! You made it :-)
Sylvia Currie: I live in Lac Le Jeune, British Columbia. Sunny and cool here!
Brent Lee (VIU): <-- From sunny Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island! :)
Heidi Piltz: Hi Sylvia - I'm in Maple Ridge, which is 2 hours east of Vancouver, in B.C.
Amanda: Hi there!
Hilda: Hi Amanda!
Heidi Piltz: I can hear folks talking, but I don't know how to speak - any hints?
Amanda: Royal Roads University
Nellie Deutsch: Hi from the Toronto and Israel (going back and forth)
Gina Bennett (COTR): hi Nellie
Nellie Deutsch: Who is the moderator speaking
Gina Bennett (COTR): my moniker says 'meeting moderator' but everybody calls me 'Gina' :)
[editing note- I changed name to Gina Bennett in the transcript. Sylvia]
Nellie Deutsch: Hi Gina
Kathreen Riel: Hi Folks, I'm in Victoria (UVic) and I'm drinking the best cup of coffee I have had in a long time:0
Amanda: ohhh kathreen! nice - what kind of coffee?
Nellie Deutsch: My daughter live in Victoria. Love the city
Kathreen Riel: Coffee? Doi Chaang from Thailand Hmmm....
Hilda: I'm from SFU, currently doing CO-OP in BCcampus
Sylvia Currie: Ha ha I'm drinking goji (sp?) berry green tea YUM
Gina Bennett (COTR): great, Hilda!
Nellie Deutsch: I'm drinking water and mint. It's really hot here.
Gina Bennett (COTR): It's FREEZING in Cranbrook BC
Nellie Deutsch: how's the weather in Victoria?
Kathreen Riel: I really need to convert to something green
Amanda: yup sounds great!
Nellie Deutsch: put your hand out
Kathreen Riel: Is it good cheese?
Gina Bennett (COTR): <puts hand out>
Gina Bennett (COTR): it's so-so cheese
carolyeager: I have dill havarti .. wanna trade?
Kathreen Riel: Oh that's too bad
Gina Bennett (COTR): oooo yeah!!!
Kathreen Riel: Dill havarti rocks
Sylvia Currie: ETUG is Educational Technology Users Group in British Columbia Canada
Sylvia Currie: We're all Brent Lee fans! :-)
Nellie Deutsch: hi Brent
Nellie Deutsch: what do you teach, Brent?
Nellie Deutsch: :)
Nellie Deutsch: Hi Jo Ann
Gina Bennett (COTR): lots of familiar 'faces' here today!
Gina Bennett (COTR): plus lots of new ones:)
Gina Bennett (COTR): Welcome Ron! (meeting moderator = Gina)
Nellie Deutsch: laptops can be heavy, too
Gina Bennett (COTR): they get heavier as the day wears on, don't they Nellie?
ron evans NIC: Hi Gina
Sylvia Currie: I'm fumbling right now using sketchbook to take notes during this session.
Gina Bennett (COTR): is sketchbook an iPad app, Sylvia?
Gina Bennett (COTR): 'drm' = digital rights management
Gina Bennett (COTR): +
Sylvia Currie: Sketchbook for iPad http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/index?siteID=123112&id=6848332
Gina Bennett (COTR): @Sylvia: thanks
Sylvia Currie: I'm really clumsy. Maybe a pen would help!
Iain Robertson: Also Noteshelf for penwork http://www.tuaw.com/2010/10/18/noteshelf-handwritten-ipad-notes-that-really-work/
Gina Bennett (COTR): @Iain: thanks for this link
Sylvia Currie: Adobe ideas is also good. Seems a little more intuitive http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/adobe-ideas-1-0-for-ipad/id364617858?mt=8
Kathreen Riel: hmmm....I'm adding up the costs of the extras- pens, cases, etc...
Gina Bennett (COTR): I think the pens are pretty cheap, Kathreen
Nellie Deutsch: nice
Gina Bennett (COTR): THOUSANDS of apps
Sylvia Currie: Yeah, I ended up with a few different cases. $$$ I'll sell you one! :-)
Gina Bennett (COTR): wow!
Gina Bennett (COTR): 'bookstore'?
Kathreen Riel: App Store- Consumers Abyss...I have spent too much time here:)
Gina Bennett (COTR): it's a bit addictive, isn't it Kathreen?
Gina Bennett (COTR): I have played a tiny bit with the Adobe Connect iPhone app
Sylvia Currie: Hmmm, going to check out the Moodle apps to use with SCoPE
Nellie Deutsch: but what about the price? Can all of our students afford an iPad?
Nellie Deutsch: you can get e-books
Nellie Deutsch: cheaper to get e-books than buy an iPad :)
Lystra Sampson-Ovid: I also want to suggest that cost may be a prohibitive factor
Heidi Piltz: I think he meant it was cheaper to get e-books than paper books. ?
Kathreen Riel: Does the iPad have a built in microphone and camera
Iain Robertson: Creation and collaboration. The next google docs update should allow editing
Nellie Deutsch: @Heidi, I'm not sure about that
Sylvia Currie: @Nellie true. Can read ebooks on computers other than ipad
Heidi Piltz: The first generation of iPad does not have a camera - that's one of the criticisms.
Gina Bennett (COTR): no camera at this time, Kathreen but I think they're thinking about it
Nellie Deutsch: Heidi, I agree
Sylvia Currie: I heard "freeze up my laptop" lol
Nellie Deutsch: I'm going to wait to get my iPad when the camera is available
Gina Bennett (COTR): I want to see handwriting recognition
Nellie Deutsch: @Gina, yes.
carolyeager: I am using my iPad with dropbox and it works very well...
Iain Robertson: Boxnet also works well
Gina Bennett (COTR): Boxnet... is that like Dropbox, Iain?
Kathreen Riel: I would like to see an Etherpad (collaborative writing tool) that works as an activity in Moodle
carolyeager: thx .. @Iain, will check it out
Nellie Deutsch: I love my iPhone
Iain Robertson: @Gina quite similar
Sylvia Currie: Funny when search the app stor for "Moodle' mtouch and mpage don't come up
ron evans NIC: i'd like to use that with my course
Gina Bennett (COTR): @Ron: sounds very appropriate, doesn't it???
carolyeager: It is a tad funny to be speaking to the end of the iPad for Skype :)
Gina Bennett (COTR): @Carol: very star trek :)
Nellie Deutsch: the sound is great on apple
Heidi Piltz: What was the "Planets" app? I dropped my headphones and must have missed it!
Sylvia Currie: Evernote is fantastic!
ron evans NIC: Planets is a way to view the sky by holding the iPad up
ron evans NIC: it shows the stars you are looking at
Heidi Piltz: Hah! Cool. Thanks.
Gina Bennett (COTR): 'augmented reality'
ron evans NIC: :)
Sylvia Currie: Neat
carolyeager: @Gina .. it is amazing and as you move around, it follows the sky view ... up close and personal :)
Gina Bennett (COTR): Wow
Nellie Deutsch: I'm adding evernote to my mac, now. Thank you
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: Evernote --yes
Nellie Deutsch: wow
Kathreen Riel: New technologies don't degrade the curriculum but they can undermine the delivery of the curriculum and the level of engagement among learners
Nellie Deutsch: @kathreen, if they come to class :)
Nellie Deutsch: will attendance improve with the ipad
Gina Bennett (COTR): @Nellie: i wonder if there's been research in that area? good question...
Kathreen Riel: @ Nellie Haa..ha..yes if they attend. Do they need to attend?
Nellie Deutsch: or will participants work at a distance
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: linking "right now knowledge with technology" and build motivation and critical thinking
Nellie Deutsch: as far as I know, students are demanding technology so they can stay away from class
Gina Bennett (COTR): Sounds like there is potential to reduce the 'border' between real world & academy
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: spaces for learning must keep up too
Nellie Deutsch: @Brent, how is the experience of reading on a mac vs reading on an iPad?
Kathreen Riel: Yes! Laptops create a physical boundary in meetings, classes etc..
Sylvia Currie: Even shape makes a difference
Gina Bennett (COTR): maybe the whole nature of citation will change
Iain Robertson: It would be nice if the publishers could optimize books for tablet delivery i.e. getting beyond mere text and being more dynamic and collaborative
Nellie Deutsch: @Gina, it just got worse with the new APA style
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: form follows function -- so citations may stay in some contexts
Gina Bennett (COTR): Brent: ask how many are PLANNING to buy an iPad
Nellie Deutsch: @my son has one
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: my niece has an ipad
Kathreen Riel: I have an iPod touch...I refuse to be tangled in a contract
carolyeager: @Iain there are some amazing 3 d books for the iPad ...
Nellie Deutsch: how many macs
Kathreen Riel: what is a 3G data plan?
Sylvia Currie: I've had an expensive few months! Need to remortgage my house :-)
Heidi Piltz: I have to leave in a few minutes: my school only has a 40 min. lunch, unfortunately. The bell just went!
ron evans NIC: It's only $50/month
Nellie Deutsch: I bought a phone without a contract
Gina Bennett (COTR): THanks for coming, Heidi!
Kathreen Riel: @Nellie can't buy an iPhone without a contract in Canada
Iain Robertson: @carolyeager I have seen some good stuff to be sure. Hopefully it is a trend that will expand
Heidi Piltz: Could you post something re: how to view the recording of this session?
Nellie Deutsch: I bought mine in Toronto without a contract
carolyeager: the 3g iPad contract is very flexible and not so expensive .. I have wifi only tho
Sylvia Currie: @Heidi, I'll post the recording in the SCoPE seminar
ron evans NIC: Is there a 3rd party camera that we can hook to the iPad?
Sylvia Currie: Yes, for some reason 3G plans for ipads pretty cheap.
jkim: My class just started as well... they are writing a test so my speakers are off. However, I will read what I can from time to time.
Gina Bennett (COTR): Thanks for coming, jkim
Sylvia Currie: @jkim Very good multitasking!
jkim: =)
ron evans NIC: Could we mount the camera on the iPad and then be able to do video conferencing?
Sylvia Currie: @Ron not right now
Heidi Piltz: Thanks for this seminar, everyone! I might be able to peek in during the next 20 minutes.
Gina Bennett (COTR): @Heidi: :)
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: -- hmmm.. multithreading -- like skype -- could have one loose thread -- if working with ipad
Gina Bennett (COTR): @Jo Ann: can you say more?
ron evans NIC: OK thanks
Kathreen Riel: thank you
ron evans NIC: Math applications would be very important
Sylvia Currie: A couple more apps I think would be useful for online learning - for reading: GoodReader and Instapaper
Nellie Deutsch: what is easier on the eye? Mac or iPad
carolyeager: I found the iPad an easier read
carolyeager: on my aging eyes :_)
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: What I was wondering from what Brent said -- was when he is on the ipad -- and skype comes on line -- would it interfere with the ipads -- I think he's referring to interference. How many sources can we even multitask -- let alone have the online flowing without interruption.
Sylvia Currie: I love reading books. Especially good for night reading
Nellie Deutsch: I heard that kindle is easier on the eye than the iPad
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: Night reading -- yes
Iain Robertson: MacBook Air looks pretty good. About $1000 bucks with education discount
Gina Bennett (COTR): kindle is very easy on the eyes, but no backlight
carolyeager: I heard the same of Nook ... I think one needs to check them all out
Gina Bennett (COTR): !!!
Nellie Deutsch: I'm a highlighter junkie
Nellie Deutsch: I need to hold a highlighter when I read
Gina Bennett (COTR): thanks
Nellie Deutsch: what's the truth about flash?
Nellie Deutsch: Is apple fighting adobe?
Nellie Deutsch: so what will html5 do to adobe?
Iain Robertson: html5 will likely supercede flash
Nellie Deutsch: so will elluminate be in danger, too?
Gina Bennett (COTR): would be nice not to have to fuss with plugins
Nellie Deutsch: I saw the demo that apple gave
Kathreen Riel: One of my students posted this reflection http://lauren-cittonedci336.blogspot.com/search/label/Technologyabout the use of iPads at a school she is currently observing
Gina Bennett (COTR): Great, thanks Kathreen
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: I wonder about "monopolies" in the future -- consistency and access versus collaboration and cooperation without monopoly
Nellie Deutsch: is it true that flash is messing our systems?
Gina Bennett (COTR): @Jo Ann: do you see the ipad contributing, or breaking down the monopoly?
Nellie Deutsch: so now apple and ms are joining forces
Nellie Deutsch: monopoly of MS, maybe
Kathreen Riel: Maybe it's not monopoly but polarization of products?
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: ipad as it is -- is just another "tool" which can link up -- but I think it is a bigger question of who will produce these things and own them
ron evans NIC: What environment do you use to develop apps?
Kathreen Riel: Expanding the gatekeepers and the notion of consumer generated content
Gina Bennett (COTR): "cathedral vs. bazaar", if you follow that analogy
ron evans NIC: OK
Gina Bennett (COTR): i see a penguin on your shoulder, Brent :)
Brent Lee (VIU): http://www.apple.com/mac/facetime/
Nellie Deutsch: how do you get around Moodle and Safari?
Kathreen Riel: I have experienced a few problems using Safari and Moodle. I use Firefox
Sylvia Currie: Interesting re facetime
Nellie Deutsch: @Kathreen as an administrator
Gina Bennett (COTR): people, we are coming to the end of the hour so feel free to leave if you have to.
Kathreen Riel: Ooops
Gina Bennett (COTR): I think we can hang around a bit longer with Brent if you have the time
Nellie Deutsch: @Brent that's great news
Sylvia Currie: Yes, no wysiwyg editor in Moodle with Safari
Nellie Deutsch: @Sylvia, exactly
Nellie Deutsch: when is that going to change, Sylvia?
Kathreen Riel: This was awesome!
Iain Robertson: Thanks for a great event
Nellie Deutsch: Great session, Brent
Jo Ann Hammond-Meiers: Brilliant Brent
ron evans NIC: Thanks Brent!
Hilda: thanks Brent!
Lystra Sampson-Ovid: Thanks for a great and relevant discourse
carolyeager: Thank you so much for a great discusion.
Sylvia Currie: http://scope.bccampus.ca/mod/forum/view.php?id=8491
Nellie Deutsch: thank you, Gina and Sylvia
Sylvia Currie: Thanks Gina and Brent!
Gina Bennett (COTR): sylvia, how do i stop recording???
Lystra Sampson-Ovid: timely...assists with decision making
Heidi Piltz: Just peeked in - is there any way of recording the comments? There were some good links that I didn't have a chance to follow up.
Sylvia Currie: Yes, I'll grab the chat and post it in SCoPE as well. Plus it will be with the recording
Brent Lee (VIU): Thanks! I shall see you all soon and online!
